Bengaluru, Mar 23: Business magnet and JD(S) chief general secretary B M Farooq, who had tasted defeat in 2016 Rajya Sabha polls from Karnataka thanks to the cross voting by party rebels, today got only two votes!

When JD(S) state president and Assembly floor leader H.D. Kumarswamy realized that his party’s candidate cannot win the polls, he decided to boycott the elections. By the time two of the 37 JD(S) MLAs had cast their vote.

A total of 28 JD(S) MLAs boycotted the elections after a heated argument with the Returning Officer who had allowed Congress MLA and former Minister Baburao Chinchansur and Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa to vote again with a second ballot paper.

Remaining seven suspended JD(S) MLAs violated the whip and cross voted to facilitate the victory of the third candidate fielded by the Congress.

Among the four other candidates in the fray, Rajeev Chandrasekhar of the BJP got the highest number of votes (50). Congress candidates — G.C. Chandrashekar got 46 votes, L. Hanumanthaiah 44 and Naseer Hussain got 42 votes. Interestingly, among the Congress candidates, the third candidate, Chandrashekar, secured the highest votes.

Following heated arguments, voting was suspended for some time. Based on the JD(S) petition, the Election Commission of India replaced Mr. Murthy and appointed M.S. Kumaraswmay as the Retuning Officer. Mr. Kumarawamy is the Joint Secretary of the State Legislative Assembly.

Four votes were declared invalid. Votes cast in the second ballot paper by Mr. Chinchansur and Mr. Thimmappa and those of two other legislators were declared invalid as they marked the ballot paper wrongly.

The Gowda father-son combination never tried seriously to get elected Farooq Bhai to Rajya sabha. In 2016 and now they knew that BMF will never reach the end point, because their tangrams proved only gimmicks. If big Gowda tried seriously in congress high command level definitely there would have been good result. It is just hushups, they really wants Farooq Bhai beside them in state politics to serve their needs.

Bengaluru, Feb 7: Karnataka's Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services on Thursday issued guidelines for testing, isolation, hospital admission and discharge in view of the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (nCoV) in Wuhan city of China, a virus that has infected nearly 20,000 globally and has killed more than 500 in China.

According to the guidelines, the sample of any passenger, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic, with a history of travel to or residence in Wuhan city of China in the last 14 days, has to be collected and tested.

And the sample of any health personnel, who develops symptoms of the virus after being associated with the infected persons, has to be collected.

The circular further says that the clinical sample of any suspect/probable case of nCoV will be sent to the laboratory confirmation and the case will be kept in isolation. If tested positive, the treatment has to be provided as per the existing guidelines.

The virus originated from Wuhan, a Chinese city, in December and has since then spread to various parts around the world.

China has imposed quarantine and travel restrictions, affecting the movement of 56 million people in more than a dozen cities, amid fears that the transmission rate will accelerate.

Bengaluru, May 26: The state government today hinted that places of religious worship belonging to Hindus will be allowed to reopen from June 1, keeping social distancing and other norms in place.

In principle, the government has decided to open temples coming under the Muzrai department after Lockdown 4.0 ends on May 31. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

“Movement of people on air and rail has started. We have been receiving repeated pleas from devotees that temples should be opened. When this was discussed with the CM during a review of the Muzrai department, it was decided that temples can start from June 1,” Muzrai Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary told reporters.

Poojary said all day-to-day activities will be allowed in temples. “But religious fairs and ceremonies will not be permitted,” he said.

Mosques and churches

Asked whether his government will allow opening of mosques and churches too from June 1, he replied that they don't come under his Muzrai dept.

Howvever, government sources said this may apply to mosques, churches and other places of religious worship as well. However, this decision will be subject to whether or not the Centre will allow places of religious worship to be open for the public after Lockdown 4.0, an official said.

All places of religious worship have been closed for the public ever since Karnataka enforced a state-wide lockdown on March 24 to contain COVID-19.

Bengaluru, May 4: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday said that the health of the migrants who have been allowed to move, should not be jeopardized and appropriate tests must be conducted.

"The task was to send the workers to their places. However, their health should not be jeopardized. This decision made for their benefit should not be a travesty for them. There will also be physical interference on the buses and appropriate tests must be done," said Kumaraswamy.

"The lockdown, which was implemented without any prerequisites, is now loosened without warning. The state government, which has allowed migrant workers to move to the city, has mobilized large numbers of people. By this, the government is playing with their health," he added.

He continued saying that the government should not lose out on an unscientific move that resulted in the loss of thousands of crores of rupees from a custodial lockdown.

"Workers and villages must be sober. The government must take all necessary precautions in this regard," he added.
