Board of Governors vow to transform GMU into the First Private Academic Health

The new Board of Governors (BoG) of the Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, headed by the Founder, President of the BoG Mr. Thumbay Moideen, met on Saturday, February 4, 2017, to deliberate on the future strategic plans while reminiscing the accomplishments of the year gone by.

Also attending the meeting were Prof. Hossam Hamdy - Chancellor of GMU and Prof. Gita Ashok Raj – Provost of GMU. Other members of the board include Prof. Richard Raymond – President & CEO of Medical College of Wiscosin, USA; Dr. Lorenzo. M. Leoni – Managing Partner TiVenture (Agrie Invest), Switzerland; Dr. Mohammed Amin Al Awadi - Assistant Undersecretary for Training & Planning – Ministry of Health, Bahrain; Prof. Nadia Badrawi - Vice - President and Founder – ANQAHE , Cairo, Egypt; Dr. Tayeb A. Kamali - Director General, Education and Training, Ministry of Interior - Abu Dhabi, UAE; Prof. Salem Chouaib - Director of Research, Institute Gustave Roussy, Paris, France; Mr. Feroz Allana - Director, IFFCO Group of Companies, Sharjah, UAE; Mr. Hamid Taylor - General Manager, Finance House, Abu Dhabi, UAE and Mr. Akbar Moideen Thumbay - Vice President - Healthcare Division, Thumbay Group - Ajman, UAE.

The BoG discussed in the strategic plans to make GMU one of the leading international universities in education, healthcare and research. “The University is expanding its networks of affiliated Thumbay academic hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and diagnostic labs. The Thumbay academic hospital network will have a total of 1000 beds in the UAE, 1500 beds in India and 750 beds elsewhere in the Gulf and Africa by 2022, taking the total number of hospitals to 15 worldwide. The Gulf Medical University - Ajman will soon become a full-fledged University with Engineering and Management courses in addition to Medicine. The Group also plans to open three new University campuses across 3 different countries. By 2022, Thumbay Group plans to add 25 Thumbay Labs and 100 Thumbay Pharmacies,” explained Mr. Thumbay Moideen, detailing on the strategic objectives.

Prof. Hossam Hamdy, the Chancellor said that GMU was undergoing a major transformation, that new strategic objectives have been identified and the expansion plans aim to develop the University into the first private Academic Health System in the region. “Our transformation into an Academic Health System will not only impact the health of the community, but it will also contribute in a big way to advances in education, healthcare and research, in addition to significantly improving the quality of patient care,” he added.

Kuwait will allow citizens and residents to travel to and from the country, starting August 1, the government communication center tweeted on early Thursday, citing a cabinet decision.

The decision excludes residents coming from Bangladesh, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, Nepal.

Last month, Kuwait announced it would partially resume commercial flights from August, but does not expect to reach full capacity until a year later, as its aviation sector gradually recovers from a suspension sparked by the Covid-19 crisis.

Mar 28: Just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Abu Dhabi crown prince on the Coronavirus Pandemic, India “thanked the UAE authorities for accommodating the 19 Indian nationals who were stuck at Dubai airport for past several days”.

The Indian mission in Dubai tweeted, “They got stranded due to various restrictions to deal with Covid-19 pandemic. Hotel rooms have been given to them inside the airport. Our Consulate had been in constant touch with the Indian nationals and UAE and Indian authorities. We had also provided some financial help to enable our stranded passengers to buy food. The situation was tough due to the pandemic situation.”

During their conversation last evening, Abu Dhabi crown prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan had “assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the welfare of the over two million Indians living in UAE and contributing to its economy”. PM Modi “thanked the Crown Prince for his personal attention to the health and safety of Indian expatriates in the present situation”.    

A statement issued late on Thursday night by the MEA said, “The two leaders exchanged information and views on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the situation in their respective countries, as well as the steps being taken by their Governments. They agreed that the next few weeks would be crucial to control the spread of the virus, and required concerted and coordinated efforts by all countries. In this context, they appreciated the organisation of a Virtual Summit among G20 Leaders earlier in the day, to discuss the pandemic.

Both leaders emphasised the importance they attach to the strength and richness of the bilateral relationship. They agreed to maintain regular consultations between their officials in the present situation, particularly to ensure continuity of logistical supply lines.”

Dubai, Jun 30: The UAE Embassy in India on Tuesday urged expats stranded in India to procure travel approvals from the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) in the UAE ahead of their travel to the UAE.

It has also assured UAE residence visa holders that a no-objection letter to travel would be issued on a humanitarian basis, as long as the resident meets all conditions set by the government of UAE.

The UAE Embassy in New Delhi tweeted Tuesday morning, "The @UAEembassyIndia would like to draw the attention of the valid UAE residence permit holders currently present in India, to the necessity of obtaining necessary approval from the @ICAUAE while ensuring that all conditions set by the UAE competent authorities are observed."

It added, "Please note that UAE will issue no objection letter to travel in some humanitarian cases only that meet all conditions and requirements."

The embassy also affirmed its commitment to the decisions of the Indian authorities regarding the continued closure of airports in India, and implementation of some restrictions that do not allow foreign airlines to carry passengers.

"We express our thank for your cooperation and your understanding of the current global situation, and in case there is any developments in this regard, we will publish it on the official platforms of embassy (sic)," the Embassy tweeted.
