Boat capsizes off Karwar coast while ferrying devotees; 8 dead, 17 rescued

Karwar, Jan 21: As many as eight people drowned after a boat ferrying devotees to the mainland from an island temple capsized off the Karwar coast on Monday.

The incident occurred at around 3 p.m. when the devotees were returning after participating in ‘Koormagad Narasmiha Jatre’ held at Koormagad island, around 3 kms from Karwar.

According to the Indian Navy, there were 26 persons on the boat of whom 17 were immediately rescued by civilian boats. Search is on for a missing person.

Indian Navy's Western Naval Command said that it was alerted about the incident at around 4.45 p.m. and has despatched two Chetak Helicopters and two fast interceptor crafts to the area for search and rescue.

Diving teams from Karwar Naval Area have also been deployed in the area.

MLA Roopali Naik was present at the district hospital, inquiring about the health of the survivors.

Bengaluru, Feb 9: A man in Karnataka fled just before his wedding after his parents cancelled the ceremony over a disagreement about the saree that the bride wore duiring a ritual.

BN Raghukumar, who belonged to a village near Karnataka's Hassan town, did not to show up at his wedding, acting on the directions of his parents. The incident took place on Wednesday.

"We have registered a cheating case against Raghukumar. He is absconding," Hassan Superintendent of Police Srinivas Gowda told news agency. The police have also registered a case against the groom's parents.

Raghukumar and BR Sangeetha fell in love a year ago and decided to get married with the consent of their respective families.

However, Raghukumar's parents asked Sangeetha to change her saree during some rituals as they were not happy with its quality.

Following this dispute, the groom's parents cancelled the wedding scheduled on Thursday and directed their son to run away.

Bengaluru, May 18: With the detection of 99 fresh cases of COVID-19, highest single-day spike, including 24 from Bengaluru Urban district, the total number of persons contracted for the disease in the state has surged to 1,246.

Apart from 24 fresh cases in Bengaluru Urban district, Mandya recorded 17 cases followed by Uttara Kannada (09), Raichur (06), Yadagiri (06), Gadaga (05), Kalaburagi (10), Hassan (04), Koppal (03), Vijayapura (05), Mysuru (01), Belagavi (02), Ballari (01), Udupi (01), Kodagu (01) and Koppal (03).

So far 37 persons had succumbed to the virus in the state.

Mangaluru, Jan 24: The Srushti Kala Vidyalaya will be conferring it's 'Srushti Kalabhushan Award' to ace Yakshagana Bhagvatha Patla Sathish Shetty.

The award ceremony will be held at RV Dental College and Hospital in JP Nagar, Bengaluru on February 2, as part of the decennial celebrations of the Vidyalaya.

Chayapathi Kanchibail, founder of the Vidyalaya, said, "The award is being given to Shetty for his services to promote the art of Yakshagana and for his welfare work through the Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation."
