Former Chairman of Vijaya Bank B B Shetty dies

Mangalore, Aug 4:  B B Shetty, Former Chairman and Managing Director of Vijaya Bank died on August 2 after a brief illness.

He was 77.

B B Shetty was appointed as the Chairman and Managing of Vijaya Bank on July 1, 1992 for the period up to January 31, 1996.

He had joined Vijaya Bank in December 1975 as Manager at Administrative Office. He was elevated to the post of General Manager in October 1984. Later in the year 1989 he was appointed as an Executive Director of Indian Bank for the period up to June 1992. Before joining Vijaya Bank he was working as Chief Economist in-charge of Planning and Development Department in Central Bank. A master’s Degree holder in Economics, University of Bombay, he began his career with the National Council of Applied Economics Research and thereafter was the financial correspondent of Financial Express, Bombay.

Mr  Shetty was an examiner for CAIIB examinations. He had Training in India and abroad on banking subjects. He was deputed to attend training and conference at Deutsche Bank in West Germany and Barclays.

Mandya, Apr 3: Following the lock down in the country, people habit ventured into Liquor bottles worth several lakhs of rupees have been stolen at two places in the district.

Miscreants targeted a wine store at Chikka Mandya on the outskirts of the town in the early hours and also made away with the stock from a wine store near Hadly Circle in Malavalli town late night on Thursday. The incidents came to light on Friday.

A window was broken open at Chikka Mandya store and a wall was drilled at Malavalli store to take away the cartons, the police said.

Madikeri, Jun 9: A rare Rurk’s Ristella Skink was found by some wildlife enthusiasts on their way to Madapur in Kodagu district.

Ristella Rurkii, commonly known as Rurk’s Ristella, is a species of skink endemic to the Western Ghats of Southern India. It is a small, insectivorous, diurnal skink found in Shola grasslands and rain forests of hills ranges in parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The specific name, rurkii, is in honour of “Dr Rurk” who collected the type specimen in the Annamalai Hills, High Ranges, Travancore, and the Palani Hills, of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is endemic to rainforests South of Palghat Gap.

Mandya, Jul 6: With a journalist from Srirangapatna testing positive for Covid-19, the Mandya District Journalists Association was sealed as a precautionary measure.

Association President K C Manjunath said on Monday that as the reporter has tested positive for Covid-19, it was voluntarily decided to seal down the premises for another month.
