Brutal rape, murder of transgender activist in Turkey sparks public outrage

Ankara, Aug 21: Hande Kader, 22-year-old transgender woman, was reportedly raped and set on fire last week in Turkey. Kader, a sex worker and an activist for the rights of LGBT community, was found dead in Istanbul on August 12.

Since her death, LGBT rights campaigners have been tweeting with the hashtag #HandeKadereSesVer – which means ‘Make some noise for Hande Kader’. She was a symbolic figure in the country and had been the face of demonstrations by the LGBT community, especially after last year’s gay pride parade.

The middle eastern country has not criminalized the LGBT community but is extremely conservative on the issue and being a transgender is being frowned upon by society. The community has struggled recently under constant fear of persecution from the country’s conservative religious leaders. However, the death of Kader paved way for large-scale public outrage and protests in Istanbul.

Just a fortnight ago, a gay Syrian refugee named Muhammed Wisam Sankari was also murdered after being raped.

The social media campaign has successfully sparked debate across the world about homophobia. On Sunday, the protesters are likely to take to streets demanding action against Kader’s death and increasing safety measures for the LGBT community.

Thane, Jul 19: A 34-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly killing his wife after picking up a fight as he did not like the food she cooked, Thane police said.

Sachin Godane, a resident of Gaikwad Pada in Ambernath, locked his two children and an aunt in one room of the house on Friday afternoon and brutally beat up his wife Chandrakala (28) with a log and then strangled her, said Assistant Inspector JB Bhoyer of Shivajinagar police station.

Godane has been remanded in police custody for four days, he added.

Nagpur, Feb 19: The Central Bureau of Investigation said that it has arrested a former employee of Union Carbide Bhopal, who was absconding since 2016.

A senior CBI official said on Wednesday that the agency sleuths arrested S I Qureshi from Maharashtra’s Nagpur on Tuesday, who was convicted by a local court here in connection with the Bhopal gas tragedy case.

The official further said that he had been absconding since 2016.

He added that the convict would be produced in a district court.

On December 3, 1984, forty tonnes of methyl isocyanate leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide factory and settled over slums in Bhopal

A Bhopal court convicted eight people in 2010 to two years each in jail over the gas plant leak that killed thousands of people.

The eight convicted included the Chairman of the Indian arm of the Union Carbide (UCIL) Keshub Mahindra, Managing Director V P Gokhale, Vice-president Kishore Kamdar, Works Manager J Mukund, Production manager S P Chowdhury, Plant superintendent K V Shetty and Production Assistant Qureshi.

The CBI had taken over the Bhopal gas tragedy case on December 12, 1984.

Kanpur, May 24: Three persons onboard separate Shramik Special trains lost their lives due to various ailment, officials said here on Saturday.

"Family members of the deceased said all were suffering from serious ailment. The travel history of all the three deceased passengers was taken, Kanpur District Magistrate Brahma Deo Ram Tiwari said.

Giving details about the deceased, he said Naichinalyu Disang (23), a resident of Nagaland, was going from Delhi to Dimapur.

"She was suffering from liver ailments," Tiwari said. As she coughed and vomited in the train, other passengers got terrified, he added.

The district magistrate said the body reached Kanpur Central Station at around 10.00 am.

Sample has been taken to check for the presence of novel coronavirus. She was working at a spa in Himachal Pradesh, he said.

Tiwari said Rajendra Prasad (50), a resident of Unnao, died on the Lucknow-bound special train from Andhra Pradesh.

Munni Devi (80), a resident of Siwan district in Bihar, died onboard the special train going from Surat to Siwan, the senior official informed.
