BSY remains mum as Lingayat row rages

Bengaluru, Sep 11: BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa on Monday declined to comment on Siddaganga Mutt seer Shivakumara swami purportedly favouring a separate religious status to the Lingayat faith.

“I will not comment on this. There will be clarity on the issue in a couple of days,” Yeddyurappa, himself a Lingayat, told reporters.

The demand for a separate religious status for the Lingayat faith has gained steam of late, with Water Resources Minister M B Patil taking a lead role in the campaign. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has, on several occasions, insisted that he was willing to recommend to the Centre to accord religious status to the Lingayat faith if there was consensus within the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community.

On Sunday, Patil announced that the influential Siddaganga Mutt was in favour of a separate religion tag for Lingayats. Although the Mutt is yet to make clear its stand publicly, its purported support could change the dynamics of the debate.

So far, Yeddyurappa has steered clear of the issue, making him a target for Lingayat ministers in the Siddaramaiah government such as Basavaraj Rayareddy, who recently called him “a namesake Lingayat” for not supporting the separate religion demand.

Rail official in Bengaluru suspended for hiding Covid19 positive son in guest house

New Delhi, Mar 20: An official of South Western Railway has been suspended for "hiding" her son, who returned from Germany and later tested positive for coronavirus.

The youth has been hiding at a railway guest house in Bengaluru, officials said on Friday.

"She (the railway official) not only failed to inform authorities about her son's return from Germany, but also endangered the lives of others by lodging him in a railway rest house near the main Bangalore railway station," railway spokesperson E Vijaya said.

The Assistant Personnel Officer (Traffic) has been suspended, Vijaya said.

The 25-year-old man, who came from Germany via Spain and was instructed to be in home quarantine after he landed at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 13, later tested positive for Covid-19 on March 18.

"She virtually hid her son to protect her family but endangered all of us," a South Western Railway official said.

8 returnees from Gujarat test covid-19 positive in 'green zone' Shivamogga

Shivamogga, May 10: Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa on Sunday informed that eight people who returned to the state from Gujarat have tested positive for COVID-19 in Shivamogga district.

Shivamogga district is under the green zone category.

"Eight people who have returned from Ahmedabad, Gujarat have tested positive for COVID-19 in Shivamogga," said Eshwarappa.

Last week, the district administration had asked shopkeepers to open their shops on alternate days in order to avoid crowding.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the state has so far 794 confirmed COVID-19 cases which include 386 cured or discharged cases and 30 deaths.

Karnataka’s Udupi, Yadgir among emerging districts of concern for COVID-19 in India

Bengaluru, Jun 12: The Central government has identified Karnataka's Udupi and Yadgir among the "emerging districts of concern" for COVID-19 in the country. Confirming the development, a top official of the state health department said, "they (centre) had reviewed these two districts a few days back...there was a sudden spurt of cases due to Maharashtra returnees turning positive." Sources said union cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba, during a recent video conference with state chief secretaries and health secretaries, had shared his thoughts on the issue.

According to the information shared, districts with more than 400 cases, half of which was reported post-May 18 lockdown relaxation, have been identified as "emerging districts of concern." They are concentrated in the seven states/union territories of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. "Udupi and Yadgir from Karnataka, along with Gurugram in Haryana and Kolhapur in Maharashtra have 90 per cent of the cases recorded after May 18," they said.

As on June 11 evening, Udupi had a total of 969 positive cases, out of which 619 are active, while 735 positive cases have been reported in Yadgir, out of which 626 are active. The two districts had reported a total of only 11 cases each as on May 18. While Udupi till last evening had seen 349 discharges, it was 108 in Yadgir.

Both districts have reported one COVID related fatality so far. As of June 11 evening, cumulatively 6,245 COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed in the state, which included 72 deaths and 2,976 discharges.
