BSY rules out forming Karnataka govt with JDS, favours fresh polls if coalition collapses

Bengaluru, May 27: Amid speculation that JD(S)-Congress coalition may collapse following its drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls, Karnataka BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa on Sunday said his party favoured fresh Assembly elections in such an event, ruling out partnering with the regional party to form a new government.

"Forming a government with JD(S) help is an impossibility. I have had a distasteful experience of 20-20 rule under Kumaraswamy's chief ministership. I do not want to repeat the mistake again," Yeddyurappa told news agency in an interview.

The BJP had to withdraw support to the Kumaraswamy led government as the JD(S) leader had refused to step down as per the 20-20 power sharing deal in 2007.

Responding to a question, Yeddyurappa said the party is ready for fresh state elections. "We are ready for fresh Assembly elections. There is no option left for our party," he said.

Claiming that the JD(S)-Congress government has lost people's faith after losing 26 seats in Karnataka in the Lok Sabha elections, he said despite this, the coalition partners have decided to run the government, which was against the verdict of the people.

He also alleged that the coalition partners have buried the hatchet just to remain in power, instead of solving people's problems such as drought and drinking water across the state.

To another query, the senior BJP leader said the party has convened a meeting on 1 June to chart out the next course of action.

Asked whether the BJP would welcome Sumalatha Ambareesh, who defeated Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy in Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, into the party, Yeddyurappa said if Sumalatha wants to join his party, she was welcome to do so.

"Sumalatha told us that she would talk to the people of Mandya and decide on joining BJP," he added.

The Congress and JD(S) formed a coalition government in the state after the May 2018 Assembly elections threw up a hung verdict.

Congress and JD(S) ended up winning only one seat each in the Lok Sabha elections, dealing a blow to the one-year-old coalition.

JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda and Chief Minister Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil lost in Tumkur and Mandya, respectively.

Kochi, Mar 30: Kerala High Court, while hearing a petition filed against Karnataka's decision to block the border with Kerala, on Monday said that no lives should not be lost in the name of fighting coronavirus.

Kerala High Court also said that "the current problem should be resolved amicably. Both the Union government and the Karnataka government should rise to the occasion."
The Central government has informed Kerala High Court that the movement of goods and medical services qualify under essential services, which is permitted despite the lockdown, and added that directions have been issued to give priority to the movement of such goods and services.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has sought a day's time to clarify their stand.

The matter will be taken up for further hearing via video conference tomorrow.
Kerala government has submitted that the action of Karnataka government to close the border is illegal as all the national highways in the country come under the jurisdiction of the National Highway Authority.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Rajmohan Unnithan has also approached the Supreme Court seeking directions to open the Karnataka-Kerala border to allow movement of ambulances and other emergency vehicles for the transport of essential items to Kerala.
