BSY seeks stay on FIRs, says case still being probed

Bengaluru, Sept 13: BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa on Tuesday informed the High Court of Karnataka that stay can be granted on the FIRs filed against him as it is in the investigation stage and has not reached trial or the proceeding stage in the court.

Senior counsel C V Nagesh, appearing for Yeddyurappa, said the Supreme Court bars the courts from staying the proceedings in corruption cases when it reaches the court, but in his client’s case, the FIR is still in the investigation stage and stay on the FIR can be granted at this stage.

The counsel said that allegations are made against his client and nothing is proven yet.

The then chief minister had the power to pass orders and denotify land. He said that in 2013, even the Congress government had denotified 1,300 acres of land.

The counsel was making his submission on a petition filed by Yeddyurappa who has moved the court seeking directions to quash two FIRs filed by ACB and the proceedings against him. Two FIRs were filed against him in the case of ‘fake-denotification’ of 257 acres of land of which 3.6 acres of land was kept to form Shivaram Karanth Layout in Bengaluru North. Justice Aravind Kumar adjourned the hearing to Wednesday.

Udupi, July 17: An Indian expatriate from coastal Karnataka who was working in Kuwait passed away in a hospital in the oil-rich country reportedly due to covid-19.

Sheikh Mohammed Syed (54) was a native of Kharvi in Kundapura taluk of Udupi district. He is survived by his mother, wife and three daughters. 

An ex athletic champion from Bhandarkars' Arts & Science College, he was a well-known Volleyball and Kabaddi player in Kundapur.  He was associated with many sports associations in Udupi. 

An employee of KRH firm, he was hospitalized in Kuwait three weeks ago due to ill health. He was tested positive for covid-19.

He breathed his last yesterday without responding to any treatment. Final rites were held in Kuwait. 

Prior to migrating to Kuwait, he had worked in United Arab Emirates for several years. A sports enthusiast, he had trained many athletes in Udupi.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Dr Mohammed Yusuf, chairperson of the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf, passed away at a private hospital in the city today following a brief illness. He was 74.

Dr Yusuf was an industrialist and was known for his philanthropic activities. 

A veterinarian, Dr Yusuf had quit the government job and set up business in Bengaluru and Dubai decades ago and has earned considerable success.

He was re-elected as Board of Auqaf chief in January this year. He had held the post more than once in the past. 

He will be buried at the graveyard near Masjid-e-Muzammil which was built by himself at Govindapura, source said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 30: With suicide cases being reported from various parts of the state after liquor sales were stopped in Kerala following the lockdown, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed the Excise Department to provide liquor to those with a prescription from a doctor.

The move comes after many reportedly showed acute withdrawal symptoms and suicide cases were reported in the state.

On Saturday, in Kodungaloor in Thrissur district, a youth committed suicide by jumping into the river after suffering from withdrawal symptoms.

In another incident, a 38-year-old man working in a barbershop in Kayamkulam consumed shaving lotion after he didn't get alcohol. Though he was taken to hospital after he developed uneasiness, he died.

The Kerala government has also asked the Excise Department to provide free treatment and admit people with withdrawal symptoms to the de-addiction centres.

The Chief Minister has said the government is also considering the option of online sale of liquor as the sudden unavailability of alcohol may lead to social problems.
