Burglary at govt quarters: Mangaluru police catch 3; weapons seized

Mangaluru, Nov 2: Three persons have been arrested by the he Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Mangaluru City Police in connection with two recent incidents of burglary at government quarters in the city.

The police also recovered 131 gm of gold jewellery, Rs. 15,000 cash and weapons used to commit the offence. According to a release, the main accused is Jayanth alias Sandeep alias Thapori, 23, son of Anandarama, Katipalla. The two other accused, said to have helped him pledge the stolen valuables, are Vijval Poojary, 23, son of Vishwanath, Katipalla, and Gunavathi, 48, wife of Vishwanath.

With the arrest, the police say they have solved two recent incidents of burglary. On October 12, a few men entered the house of Jose and Theresa at the KPTCL quarters in Bondel when no one was home and took away jewellery worth Rs. 3.5 lakh. A case was registered with the Kavoor police.

On October 24, gold jewellery worth Rs. 3.5 lakh was stolen from the house of Harish Kumar, a resident of the Public Works Department quarters at Urvastore. A case was registered with the Urva police. According to the police, Jayanth is an accused in several cases and was out on bail, the police said. Three of the cases are in Mangaluru Police Commissionerate limits.

Similarly, Vijval Poojary is an accused in four cases of attempt to murder and has been on bail for four months. Jayanth allegedly pledged the jewellery with two financial institutions in Surathkal with the help of Vijval and Gunavathi.

The recovered articles are worth Rs. 8.44 lakh, the police said. The accused as well as the recovered articles were handed over to the Kavoor police for further action.

Mangaluru, Apr 29: One person was arrested on charges of murdering a middle-aged couple on Wednesday in Yellinje near Kinnigoli.

The area falls under the jurisdiction of Mulky police.

Police said that the deceased were identified as Vincent D’Souza (50) and his wife Helina D’ Souza (45).

The arrested was identified as Alphonso (55). He will be sent to judicial custody, said police.

Bengaluru, April 7: Karnataka government on Monday allowed bakeries and related product food units in the state to open and function with minimum staff amid a coronavirus nation-wide lockdown.

A circular issued by Rajendar Kumar Kataria, Secretary to the government said, "The Central government has permitted the functioning of food units engaged in bakery and biscuit, condiments, confectionery and sweet for manufacturing, supply and operating retail outlets with minimum staff/labour."

The circular said these units shall strictly follow the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Department of Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka government with regard to the preventive measures to be ensured for combating COVID-19.

"It is stated that all employers shall ensure that these units maintain high standard of health, hygiene, sanitation and social distancing. The units shall not permit serving/dining in the premises and only parcel/takeaways are permitted," the circular added.

Bengaluru, Apr 28: There are a total of 523 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, Department of Health and Family Welfare of Karnataka informed on Tuesday.
It informed that there are 295 active COVID-19 cases in Karnataka presently, while 207 patients have been discharged, 20 deaths have been reported.

According to a district-wise breakup, a maximum of 131 cases were reported from Bengaluru urban, followed by Mysuru with 87 cases and Belagavi with 52 cases.

India's total number of coronavirus positive cases rises to 29,974 (including 22010 active cases, 7027 cured/discharged/migrated and 937 deaths), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Tuesday.
