Buses to go off roads on July 25 as unions call stir

July 23, 2016

Bengaluru, Jul 23: All the seven unions of the state-run transport corporations (STCs) have stuck to their decision to go on an indefinite strike from Sunday midnight as talks with the government failed on Friday.

ksrtcRepresentatives of the unions, including the KSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation (KSWF) and the Akhila Karnataka Rajya Raste Sarige Noukarara Mahamandali, had a two-hour-long discussion with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy.

The leaders of the unions refused to accept Siddaramaiah's offer to enhance the quantum of hike in salary from 8% to 10%. The chief minister appealed to them to give up the strike, but the leaders did not agree.

The government had recently announced a 8% salary hike for employees of the four STCs - KSRTC, BMTC, NEKRTC and NWKRTC. Terming the hike as meagre,' the unions have given a call for an indefinite strike from July 25, demanding enhancement in the hike.

The unions are demanding 35% hike in the salaries. Besides, they have listed 41 various demands including extension of medical benefits to dependents of employees, hike in daily allowance (bata) for drivers and conductors to Rs 300, increase in the repast allowance to at least Rs 100 and opening of subsidised canteen in all depots.

H V Anantha Subbarao, general secretary, KSWF, told Deccan Herald that they had no deliberate intention to cause trouble to lakhs of passengers by keeping around 23,000 buses off the road, but it was inevitable as the government did not fulfil their salary hike demand.

Subbarao said they were ready to hold talks again with the chief minister before Monday and they have told Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy to persuade Siddaramaiah for another round of talks.

Advance booking continues

The state-run transport corporations (STCs) such as the KSRTC, NEKRTC and NWKRTC have not stopped advance booking of tickets for Monday, despite the strike call.

An official in the KSRTC said booking cannot be stopped because the unions have given a strike call. Amount will be refunded to the passengers in case of a strike, the official said.

Mangaluru, July 18: The Dakshina Kannada district administration is likely to earmark a common burial ground in the wake of growing resistance from residents of various localities in Mangaluru against burial of Covid-19 victims in their vicinity.

Recently, following protests by residents on Bolar, the body of a Covid-19 victim remained in the ambulance for hours together. The residents refused to allow the victim to be laid to rest at a burial ground attached to a mosque. The victim, who had been a resident of Idya in Surathkal, was subsequently laid to rest after DC’s intervention.

In a bid to avoid such instances in the future, the district administration has identified a burial ground on the outskirts of Mangaluru.

Former minister and incumbent Mangaluru MLA UT Khader said that he had discussed the problem at length with the officials of the Dakshina Kannada district administration, and had suggested they look for a relatively isolated space on the outskirts of Mangaluru city in order to avoid confrontation with the public.

“A parcel of land at Badaga Yekkuru, some 20km from the city has been identified as being suitable for the burial ground, but the district administration is yet to take a final decision,” Khader said.

Today, a person identified as Abdul Rasheed was transporting around 200 kilograms of beef from Kudroli abattoir to Kankanady market.

Meanwhile, miscreants began to chase beef laden vehicle and managed to waylay it near Highland Hospital. They thrashed Abdul Rasheed and poured kerosene on the beef besides damaging the vehicle.

The miscreants fled in their car and motorbikes after passersby began to gather.

Dear DC Dr. Harsha, we want to know if you will take strict action on these anti nationals / rowdis / day robbers / terrorists who ransacked auto + beaten the auto driwer and stolen Rs. 10,000 from him though he was legally transporting the meat.   They same terrorists are involved in transporting live animals to beef export houses in Gujrat owned by Brahmins / Jains.   Will you be loyal to your duty and promise.   We will see how you will handle the issue failing which you will lose our respect and we will consider you as a dramabaz and phenku.   You should follow the law and treat everyone equally.  There should not be any pity on goondas/ terrorists belonging to sangh parivar.   The terrorists who thrashed the auto driver and damaged the auto and burnt the meat by pouring kerosene are not human beings and should be treated as anti nationals + terrorists.    We hope you will discharge your duty as per the oath taken by you while accepting your post.
