Businessman from Udupi among three killed in Mumbai serial mishap

Udupi, Jul 20: At least three people including a businessman from coastal Karnataka were killed and two others injured in a serial mishap occurred on the Eastern Freeway at Trombay in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Hameed (45), son of Mahmoud Hasan from Shirva in Udupi, and two people from Maharashtra-Jaswant (40) and Vijay Kumar. Abdul Hameed was driving the Innova.

The incident, involving a white Maruti Swift Dzire, golden Toyota Innova and a black and yellow taxi, occurred around 8:50 am near the Wadala exit.

Eye witnesses claimed that the driver of the Innova lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the Taxi. Following which, it toppled on the road the Dzire crashed into the Innova.

Bystanders immediately came to the rescue of those who were injured and removed them from the debris. Traffic police was alerted about the incident around 9:15 am.

The accident led to massive traffic chaos and vehicles on Eastern Freeway diverted from RCF colony to Chembur. Entry from Deonar circle was closed for several hours.

Traffic police had to use cutters to remove the bodies and rescue the injured.

An official from RCF police station confirmed that the accident occurred after the Innova driver lost control of the vehicle at high speed. He was travelling towards Chembur, when he rammed his car into the Dzire and crossed over to the opposite side. The taxi was travelling in the first lane of the northbound road towards CST.

Two passengers from the Swift Dzire, who were injured during the accident, were rushed to Shatabdi hospital in Chembur.

Mangaluru, Jan 23: Members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Thursday held a protest against the Karnataka government, accusing it of shielding Aditya Rao, the main accused of planting an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Mangaluru airport on January 20.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court has sent the accused Aditya Rao to 10 days police custody.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Bengaluru Police said that the procedure is being followed to hand-over to the Mangaluru Police a suspect who surrendered before it two days after planting an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Mangaluru International Airport.

The IED was later defused in an open field by the personnel of the bomb disposal squad.

Mangaluru, Jul 26: Karnataka government has initiated steps to provide insurance cover for priests and others working in temples coming under the Endowment Department -- a move that will benefit 50,000 people and their families.

Speaking to media here on Saturday evening, Minister for Endowment Kota Srinivas Poojary said there is a need to implement the decision at the earliest to provide relief to the priests and families of employees working in temples.

Department officials have been directed to include employees of state-owned temples under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bima scheme and also enrol them under State Bank of India’s group personal accident insurance policy at the earliest. The Central insurance scheme will provide Rs 2 lakh cover to family members in case of death due to accidents.

Mangaluru, Mar 24: With four new coronavirus positive cases reported, surveillance against people coming out of their houses and wandering around in public places has been intensified in the coastal city of Mangaluru today.

With today's addition, the total number of positive cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has increased to five in Mangaluru.

All the four new patients are said to be Keralites. Among them three are undergoing treatment at Wenlock Hospital and another one in KMC Hospital.

There will be total restriction in place for the public to step out of their houses. Those who are found outside on the streets would be arrested, caution the district authorities.
