Hubballi, Dec 23: Dubbing the promulgation of the Citizenship Amendment Act a ‘mistake’, MLC and Congress functionary CM Ibrahim on Sunday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the legislation.
Questioning the basis of the law, and the rationale for carrying out the compilation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) across the country, Ibrahim said, “I request the PM to rescind the legislation. There is nothing wrong in taking corrective measures to set right a mistake,” he said.
The MLC also urged chief minister BS Yediyurappa to assure the people of the state that compilation of NRC would not be carried out in Karnataka. “The protest against CAA and NRC will continue in Karnataka until the central government assures the citizens of the country that neither policy will be implemented,” said Ibrahim, adding that no Muslim citizen of the country was afraid of either CAA or the NRC exercise.
“We were born here, and will be buried in this land. None can dare to throw us out,” said the MLC, lashing out at Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah for stirring up panic among the people.
Ibrahim said that Shah ought to set at rest all doubts pertaining to CAA and NRC, by clarifying all the problematic clauses, instead of disclosing nuggets of information sporadically. “This way, people will get a clearer picture on the subject,” he added.
The MLC opined that the Centre, instead of spending enormous sums on conducting the NRC exercise, could empower the local law enforcement officials and the tahsildars to get the required information about the number of foreign nationals within their jurisdiction. “I request Muslim citizens across the state to protest in a peaceful manner, which is their democratic right,” he said.
