Newsroom, Apr 11: Former Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, who heads the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is known for endorsing “immoral policing” in coastal Karnataka, has indirectly justified the intermingling of youth belonging to different religions and genders.

The septuagenarian leader was answering to a question posed by Mangaluru based activist-journalist Vidya Dinker on the BJP’s stance on inter-religious conflicts in the State in an exclusive interview to online news giant Firstpost amidst intensified campaign for 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

“In my district, Dakshina Kannada, if a Hindu girl and a Muslim boy eat ice cream together (in a parlour), they will be beaten up by groups like Bajrang Dal, Hindu Yava Sena and Hindu Jagarana Vedike... What’s your take on this?” was the question.

“My stance is very clear. Hindus, Muslims and Christians should live like the children of the same mother. This is the stance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders of BJP too... We don’t differentiate among people on the basis of their religion,” replied Mr Yeddyurappa bluntly.

“May be one or two percent people (in BJP) might have done mistake. We have already warned them,” he added, without mentioning the name of his bête noire within BJP, K S Eshwarappa, whose recent remarks against Muslims had triggered a controversy.

To another query, Mr Yeddyurappa said that the saffron party fully endorsed the Indian Constitution drafted by Dr B R Ambedkar. He claimed that BJP leader and union minister Anant Kumar Hegede had threatened to change the constitution ‘by mistake’. “Later, he apologised in the Lok Sabha (for his comment against the constitution)” he said.

The question and answer has no direct connection. So it’s a negative answer. Not positive

Udupi, Apr 25: Senior RSS leader H Somashekhar Bhatt received a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday enquiring about his health.

Bhatt got emotional hearing the Prime Minister's voice at the other end, family sources said.

The Prime Minister called at 8.30 AM and began the conversation with 'Somashekharji' and spoke for about six minutes.

The 85-year-old veteran recalled how the Jana Sangh came to power in Udupi municipality under the leadership of V S Acharya in 1968 and about his association with the Sangh Parivar through the decades and his imprisonment during the Emergency.

Bhatt, former Udupi municipality president, later said it was a rare honour for him.

"I am very glad that PM Modi called and spoke to me. I shared the experience of meeting him at the Jaipur session.

Asked to take care of health and expressed concern," he said.

The Prime Minister has been calling senior functionaries of the party who worked for the Sangh Parivar in the time of adversities to build up the BJP in its present form and seeking advice from them.

He had also called in recent days former MLA Ram Bhat who was elected from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada and D H Shankar Murthy, who was former chairman of the state legislative council, BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel tweeted.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: Karnataka and five other states have their coronavirus antibody test kits stuck in China because of the country's new policy of getting clearance from their government before a company exports its products.

Singapore-based Sensing Self Ltd and China’s Wondfo are the only companies that have cleared Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV)’s validation for rapid antibody test kit.

Dr CN Manjunath, Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and nodal officer for COVID-19 lab testing, Karnataka, said, "Inventory is ready in Hong Kong Airport. Karnataka's consignment is stuck with five other states' consignments: Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Meghalaya. On April 1 or 3, China's policy changed saying any exports going out of China has to be certified by the Chinese government."
