Can Mangaluru make it into first 20 smart cities?

Mangaluru, Jan 20: Will Mangaluru, one of the cities that included in the ambitious Smart Cities project of union government, make it into the list of 20 cities to be selected in first phase?

Venkaiah Naidu, the Union Minister for Urban Development, who was in the city on Wednesday told media persons that the list of the 20 smart cities which is to be developed as the first smart cities of India will be released by the month end.

Replying to the queries of media persons at Mangaluru International Airport enroute Thiruvanathapuram, the minister said that a committee of experts was going through the proposals to finalize to 20 cities in first phase.

40 more cities will be selected for the second phase of smart city project next year and another 40 cities would be selected for third phase.

He said that his ministry would provide Rs 100 crore to each city over the next five years for the development.

Meanwhile, a source from the ministry said that the Center has no intention to delay the project but may only fund for only 10 smart cities in the first phase if proposals don’t match quality yardsticks.

I agree with Mr. Anil Holla, first make mangalore clean by eradicating the trouble mongers who ever it may be, then think about making smart mangalore after creating smart people's city.

Of course Mangalore will make it to smart city....but 100 crore rupees is peanut....how they are going to make smart city out of this amount....

Bantwal, Feb 2: A 45-year-old man was found murdered in a parked Innova car at Shantinagar near Nagri in Sajipa Munnur in Bantwal taluk today. 

The deceased has been identified as Tasleem, a native of Kerala who was wanted in a few criminal cases. He was, according to reports, a member of Kerala's notorious Ziya. 

Tasleem was an accused in Kalia Rafiq murder in Ullal (2017). He was arrested last year in connection with a jewellery store robbery case registered in Mangaluru North police station and was sent to Kalaburagi prison. He was later released on bail. 

Police are of the suspicion that a rival gang might have kidnapped him, tried to strangle him and then stabbed him in the stomach, before fleeing the spot.

The car had been parked at the spot since morning. The locals who grew suspicious at this informed the police. Circle inspector T D Nagaraj and other officers conducted spot investigation.

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 10: At least 15 RSS activists protesting against the 16th Chikkamagaluru District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at Sringeri were detained, Police said here on Friday.

The Sangh Parivar activists gathered near the entrance of the hall where the event was being held and started sloganeering against the election of the leftist Kalkuli Vittal Hegde as the president of the literary gathering. The police then interfered and detained several protesters to bring situation under control.

Despite protests from the right wing organisations, the event went ahead and began as per the schedule.

Mangaluru, Jun 19: A repatriation flight from Doha brought 178 passengers to Mangaluru today. This is the first flight operated from Qatar to Mangaluru under the Vande Bharat Mission. 

The Air India Express flight, which took off from Hamad International Airport in Doha at 12 noon (Qatar time) landed at Mangaluru International Airport around 6.30 pm IST.

Indian embassy had prepared the list of passengers to be flown in the flight. Stranded people who were in need of emergency repatriation such as pregnant women, senior citizens and those in need of emergency medical treatment were given priority while finalising the list of passengers. 

Kannadiga organisations in Qatar such as Karnataka Sangha, Tulu Kuta Qatar, Karnataka Muslim Welfare Association, Mangalore Cricket Club, Bunts Qatar, Mangalore Cultural Association, South Canara Muslim Welfare Association, Qatar Billawas had been striving for the repatriation of stranded Kannadigas by exerting pressure on the elected representatives to operate flights. 

Kannadigas in Qatar have thanked former Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Jayaprakash Hegde for persuading the authorities concerned to facilitate the repatriation.
