Cancer-causing chemical found in Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo

New Delhi, Apr 2: Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo samples failed quality tests conducted by the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan, according to a public notice from the state’s drugs watchdog, findings that were rejected by the US drugmaker.

This comes just a few months after Indian authorities launched an investigation into J & J’s Baby Powder to see if it contains cancer-causing asbestos. J & J said in late February it had resumed production of baby talc after government tests found no asbestos in the product.

The Rajasthan Drugs Control Organisation’s notice dated March 5 said that the samples of J & J’s baby shampoo taken from two batches had failed the quality test as they contained “harmful ingredients”. It did not elaborate.

A J & J spokeswoman said that the results it received from the watchdog indicated that formaldehyde had been discovered in the samples. Formaldehyde, used in making building materials, is a known carcinogen.

“We do not accept the interim results given to us, which mentioned samples to ‘contain harmful ingredients- identification positive for formaldehyde,’” she said.

“We unequivocally maintain that our products are safe and our assurance process is among the most rigorous in the world,” the J & J spokeswoman said, adding that the company has contested the interim test results of the government analysis that were based on “unknown and unspecified methods”.

The two batches of the baby shampoo tested are due to expire in September 2021 and were manufactured at the company’s plant in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, according to the watchdog’s notice.

“We have confirmed to the Indian authorities that we do not add formaldehyde as an ingredient in our shampoo nor does Johnson’s baby shampoo contain any ingredient that can release formaldehyde over time,” the company spokeswoman said.

The Rajasthan Drugs Control Organisation and India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) were not immediately available to comment.

The federal regulator and its counterparts in Indian states launched an investigation into J & J’s Baby Powder following a Reuters report in December that the firm knew for decades that cancer-causing asbestos could be found in the product.

Earthquake tremors felt in Karnataka, Jharkhand today

Bengaluru, Jun 5: An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter Scale jolted Karnataka on Friday morning while another with a magnitude of 4.7 was felt in Jharkhand.

The tremors were felt in Hampi (Karnataka) and Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

According to NCS, the aftershocks were felt at 6:55 am in both the places today.

Bellari, Feb 23: Fringe outfit Sri Ram Sena leader Sanjeev Maradi said on Friday said that organization will reward Rs 10 lakh to the person who will 'eliminate' those who have raised "pro-Pakistan" slogans including Amulya who recently raised "Pakistan Zindabad" slogan at an anti-CAA protest in Bengaluru.

"We request both state and central government not to release them (Pro-Pakistan sloganeers) on bail. If they will be released Sri Ram Sena will eliminate them or will give a reward of Rupees 10 lakh to those who kill them," said Sanjeev Maradi.

"We condemn such slogans. This is like a virus. First, it happened in Jammu and Kashmir, then in JNU, then Mysore and then a student named Amulya raised pro Pakistan slogan in Bengaluru," he added.

A girl named Amulya raised 'Pakistan Zindabad' slogan on Thursday at an anti-CAA protest where AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi was also invited.

Thereafter, a case was registered under Section 124A (Offence of sedition) of the Indian Penal Code against the student.

Meanwhile, Imran Pasha, the organizer of the anti-CAA protest said that Amulya was not invited to the event.

"We were the organizers of the event. At around 6:45 pm on Thursday, when I and Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi were entering the stage area, we did not notice Amulya was present there. I did not invite her," Pasha told media.

Karnataka Cong leaders to appeal to high command for of KPCC chief, CLP leader

Bengaluru, Jan 5: Former Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara has said the Karnataka Congress has unanimously decided to appeal to the party high command regarding the appointment of KPCC President and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in the state.

Speaking to reporters, the Congress leader said, "We have decided to gather the opinion of senior leaders regarding the selection of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president and opposition leaders. We will appeal to the high command regarding the same. The party will decide its next course of action."

He made these remarks after a meeting of senior party leaders was held at Parameshwara's residence here on Saturday.

Adding that the Congress leaders discussed the current political scenario in the state, Parameshwara said: "We held a meeting to reiterate that we are not confused and we all are together."

"There has been no personal discussion on who should be the president," he said.

Earlier, KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had tendered resignation from their respective posts owning moral responsibility for the party's poor performance in the recent by-polls.
