Captain Vinay sees more Karnataka players in Team India

March 14, 2015

Bengaluru, Mar 14: A special occasion brought Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, who rarely attends any of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) functions, to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Friday (March 13).

Himself a two-time Ranji Trophy champion, Chandrasekhar was there along with G Kasturirangan, Gundappa Viswanath, B Vijayakrishna, Sadanand Vishwanath, Raghuram Bhatt and other Karnataka stalwarts to greet and congratulate R Vinay Kumar's team, which successfully defended the Ranji Trophy title on Thursday with an innings win over Tamil Nadu in the final in Mumbai.

Captain Vinay

The bus carrying the team from the airport entered the stadium premises at 1:25 p.m. amidst drumbeats, bursting of firecrackers and a lot of waving of the state flag. Robin Uthappa, the season's highest run-getter, was the first to get out of the bus, followed by the rest as they were hugged by those around them, eager to be a part of history, or requested for a photograph or an autograph on their way to the pavilion hall for the official reception party.

The trophy glittered on the side stage as players, support staffers and selectors were presented with a turban (the Mysore peta) and a shawl. There was good humour too when Viswanath placed the headgear wrongly on CM Gautam's head. Someone pointed out that he had to turn it around and, always up for a quip, Viswanath replied that he was trying to practice the reverse sweep.

The loudest cheer from the team, seated on the opposite side to the rest of the gathering, was reserved for J Arunkumar and Mansoor Ali Khan, the batting and bowling coaches respectively, B Siddaramu and Ramesh Rao, the two managers, physio Shravan, trainer Prashant Pujara, video analyst Srinivas, and Atanu, the masseur. It told a bit about the bonhomie in the camp that has brought Karnataka five trophies in the last two seasons.

Vinay, who became the first captain to score a century and take five wickets in an innings in a Ranji Trophy final and also ended as the season's joint-highest wicket taker with 48 scalps, thanked everyone he could for the support, and said how, at one point during the season, he was fed up with the amount of advice he was getting from fans on social media. Though he ignored most of them, he said he was happy that the team was being followed so religiously in a World Cup year.

Vinay also recollected the video message he had recorded for the Sports Writers Association of Bangalore awards ceremony last year, when he had pointed out that if his side could even play at 80 percent of its potential, Karnataka would be able to retain the trophy.

Among the players, Uthappa, KL Rahul, Karun Nair and Abhimanyu Mithun were most sought after as journalists, club members and the cricketers mingled after a group photograph of the winning team ended the event.

However, amid the celebrations, no one had lost sight of the upcoming challenges.

Karnataka would now have to defend their Irani Cup title against Rest of India in Bangalore from March 17, before the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 tournament, the one that got away from them last season, starts on March 24.

Brijesh Patel, the KSCA secretary, while complimenting the team, pushed the bar a bit higher for the boys: "The press guys are calling me to find out what award KSCA is going to give to the boys. I said, 'we will definitely give them, but they still have two more trophies to win'."

Vinay, on his part, used the platform to connect history with the future. "In 1995-96, we had so many players from Karnataka playing for India," he said. "We are soon going to repeat that."

Talk about the pressures a champion side has to deal with.

New Delhi, Apr 24: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday extended wishes to the "most prolific batsman of all time" Sachin Tendulkar on his 47th birthday.

ICC took to Twitter and wrote: "Happy birthday to Sachin Tendulkar, the most prolific batsman of all time! To celebrate, we will give you the opportunity to vote for his top ODI innings in a bracket challenge! Stay tuned to join the celebrations."

The Maharashtra-born player had an illustrious career in the game, creating several records.
Tendulkar made his debut in Test cricket on November 15, 1989. In the same year on December 18, he played his first ODI match.

The legendary cricketer has the most number of runs in the longest format of the game, amassing 15,921 runs. Along the way, Tendulkar scored 51 Test centuries, most by any player.

Things are no different in ODI cricket as Tendulkar atop the list of most runs in this format as well. He has accumulated 18,426 runs in ODI which includes 49 tons.

Tendulkar represented the country in six World Cups during his career that lasted for 24 years. He was the part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad.

This year, Master Blaster decided not to celebrate his birthday due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis in the country.

Karachi, May 11: Pakistan might play more Test matches during their tour of England if it goes ahead as scheduled in July after the West Indies pulled out of an assignment there in June owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Pakistan Cricket Board and the England and Wales Cricket Board officials are due to have a video conference on May 18 to discuss how they should proceed with the tour given the situation because of the pandemic.

"At present we have to play three Tests and three T20 internationals but the number of Tests could be increased and the tour could start a bit early in July," a PCB source said.

The source said that the ECB could offer to organise a four or five Test series against Pakistan if the West Indies tour didn’t go ahead.

Issues that are likely to be discussed in the May 18 meet are a quarantine period for Pakistani players when they arrive in England in July and limiting the venues for the matches and playing before empty stadiums.

PCB CEO Wasim Khan confirmed the video conference but said so far, the ECB has not spoken to them on increasing the number of matches on the tour which is scheduled between July and September.

"Things will be clear after the meeting but whatever decision we take we will consult our captains and head coaches before giving any confirmation," Khan said.

The PCB has so far kept mum on the chances of the series taking place in England because of the COVID-19 situation.

But with the British government due to announce measures to ease the lockdown in the country, it appears Pakistan could be touring on schedule.

Some former players have, however, asked the PCB to tread on the side of caution.

"If the West Indies have decided to postpone their series in June because of safety reasons and because of the situation then the PCB should also be very careful before taking up any offer from the ECB," a former captain said.

The West Indies Cricket Board said its players have to be convinced of their safety for it to commit to the assignment, which "is not possible in June."

"...we will continue our discussions with the ECB and other Internationals Boards on trying to find new dates," it said in a recent press release.

"We will only travel to England to play the series if our players can be assured that it is safe to do so," it added.

Pakistan is also scheduled to play an ODI series against Ireland while in UK but that series could be rescheduled and also be held in England.

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.
