Car plunges into lake killing 5 in Hassan

Holenarasipur (Hassan dist), Sept 28: Five people, including two women, met a watery grave as the car they were travelling in fell into Hanumanahalli Lake in the taluk. The accident happened a few days ago but went unreported until Wednesday morning when one of the bodies of the deceased and the car was seen floating in the lake.

The deceased have been identified as Anil (27) of Tattakere in Holenarasipur taluk, Umesh (26) of Shivamogga and Anju (25) of Arsikere. The identity of two women is yet to be ascertained.

Anil and his friends were travelling to Gorur via Hangaralli and Hassan on September 24 when the mishap occurred. The accident did not come to light as it occurred during night. On Wednesday morning, a farmer, who had taken his cattle to the lake, found a body and a car floating in the lake. He immediately alerted the police.

Fire and Emergency Services personnel rushed to the spot and lifted the car using a crane. The bodies of the remaining four persons were found in the car.

According to the family members, Anil, Umesh and Anju were friends. While Anil owned a car and was a driver, Umesh and Anju sold snacks in trains.

ASP Vamshi Krishna, Circle Inspector Vasanth and others visited the spot. A case has been registered.

Mangaluru, Jul 4: Normal life was thrown out of gear as heavy rain under the influence of South East Monsoon started lashing coastal districts of Karnataka including Dakshina Kannada on Saturday.

The heavy rain is likely to continue till July 7, according to the meteorological experts. 

The water level in Netravati river is increasing and district administration has warned the people living in the low lying areas and has asked them to move to safer places.

Owing to lack of storm water drains, water logging of the roads inconvenienced the motorists at KS Rao Road, Pumpwell, Bejai, and other areas. 

The Met department sounded warning for fishermen not to venture into the sea observing that strong winds with speed reaching 50-60 kmph are likely to prevail over Southwest and West Central Arabian Sea till July 5.

Mangaluru, Jan 29: The police have registered a suo motu case against some of the youths who raised life threat slogans against former Karnataka Minister and Congress MLA UT Khader during the pro-Citizenship Amendment Act rally here on January 27.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the youths belonging to BJP and other saffron outfits raising slogans that they will “cut off his limbs and chop off his head if necessary” during the rally organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday.

Though Mr Khader did not file a complaint, the Congress party had urged the police to register a suo motu case.

Bengluru, Apr 20: Lockdown restrictions have been extended by a day by the Karnataka government, in an order issued by chief secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar on Sunday.

The order directed all heads of departments, district deputy commissioners and superintendent of policies to "continue to implement the measures presently in force" as per Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines dated April 14, "till the midnight of April 21, 2020."

The MHA guidelines had earlier allowed the state government to relax lockdown norms post-April 20.
