Cash-for-vote scam: Andhra CM Naidu lands in trouble over purported phone conversation

June 8, 2015

Hyderabad, Jun 8: A purported telephonic conversation in an audio tape between Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and nominated MLA Elvys Stephenson, aired in some TV channels, has given a new twist to a cash-for-votes controversy.

The reported conversation suggested that the Andhra CM was giving "assurance of all sorts" to the MLA if he voted for a TDP nominee in the Telangana legislative council election.

NaiduDuring the conversation, Naidu purportedly said, "Our people briefed me. I am with you; don't bother. For everything I am with you. What all they spoke we will honour."

TDP legislator Revanth Reddy was arrested on May 31 for allegedly trying to bribe nominated MLA Stephenson to vote for a party nominee in the legislative council election. The anti-corruption bureau of Telangana is in the process of questioning the TDP MLA and two others who have been arrested in cash-for-votes case.

Based on a complaint by Stephenson, Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials held Revanth, Sebastian Harry and Uday Simha after they were caught while allegedly handing over Rs 50 lakh to Stephenson. Earlier, Telangana home minister had alleged that Naidu was the key person in the issue.

Reacting to the fresh twist, Parakala Prabhakar, advisor (communications) to the Andhra government said the tapes were fabricated and the AP government was taking the issue seriously.

Prabhakar alleged the Telangana government was trying to malign the image of the Naidu and mislead the people of Andhra Pradesh by resorting to cheap tactics.

He wanted to know from the TRS government as to how it got the audio tape. "If you have done telephone tapping, it is a crime and if you have recorded Mr Chandrababu Naidu's voice on different occasions, tampered it and presented to mislead people that it is his conversation," he said.

"It is not the chief minister's conversation. How come they are available outside. Telangana government has to give answer to this. Telangana CM and home minister should give answers," Parakala said.

Andhra Pradesh's finance minister and senior TDP leader, Y Ramakrishnudu, said the audio tape was a proof that the TRS government was violating law by tapping phones.

The new controversy may create a constitutional crisis as the Telangana ACB is planning to summon Naidu for questioning in the case.

Hyderabad is the common capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) governmet in Telangana and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government in Andhra have taken up the issue with ESL Narasimhan, who is the governor for both the Telugu states.

The audio tape was released just three days after Telangana home minister N Narasimha Reddy said the government had proof that Naidu spoke to Stephenson and some other MLAs of the TRS to lure them to vote for TDP-BJP candidates in the elections.

The audio tape was first played by T News, a Telugu news channel owned by ruling the TRS, and was later picked up by others.

In swift developments on Sunday night, Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao met governor Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan, while Naidu called a meeting with Andhra Pradesh director general of police JV Ramudu and other officials to take stock of the situation.

Rao's meeting with the governor, the second in three days, came minutes after the release of the audio tape that came to light a few hours after ACB questioned Reddy and two others for a second day in the cash-for-votes case. A court had sent them to four-day custody of ACB.

New Delhi, Feb 26: Calling the recent violence in Delhi as 'planned conspiracy', Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday demanded Union Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation over the clashes that left 20 people dead in two days.

"CWC (Congress Working Committee) believes Home Minister and Centre is responsible. The Home Minister should tender his resignation with immediate effect," the Congress party's interim chief told reporters here.

Violent clashes erupted between pro and anti-CAA groups in parts of northeast Delhi on Monday, leading to widespread vandalism and arson for over two days.

While many blamed police for inaction to control the mobs, Union Home Minister Amit Shah met the top brass of Delhi Police, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, LG Anil Baijal and directed the officials to control the situation.

Gandhi blamed both the Central and the Delhi governments, saying the administration did not take adequate steps on time to curb violence in the national capital.

"Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Center is equally responsible for not activating the administration to reach out to the people to maintain peace and harmony," Sonia added.

The death toll in the violence rose to 20 on Wednesday, according to GTB hospital authorities.

Government sources told ANI that the National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval has been given the charge of bringing normalcy in the capital.

Sources also said that Doval will brief Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Cabinet about the prevailing situation.

The NSA last night visited Jaffrabad, Seelampur and other parts of northeast Delhi where he held talks with leaders of different communities.

Without naming any leader, the Congress interim president also targeted the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party for making inflammatory statements saying that "there is a conspiracy behind the violence, country also saw this during Delhi elections. Many BJP leaders made inciting comments creating an atmosphere of fear and hatred."

New Delhi, Feb 22: China is delaying grant of clearance to India's proposal to send an Indian Air Force flight to carry relief material for people affected by coronavirus in the neighbouring country and bring back Indians from its city of Wuhan, official sources said Saturday.

India was to send a C-17 military transport aircraft to Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, on February 20 but the plane could not take off as permission was not granted for the flight.

"China is deliberately delaying grant of clearance for the evacuation flight," a high-level source said.

The aircraft was to carry a large consignment of medical supplies to China and bring back more Indians from Wuhan.

Sources said the Chinese side continued to maintain that there was no delay in granting permission for the flight to go, but "inexplicably" the clearance has not been given.

In a letter to President Xi Jinping earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed India's solidarity to the people and government of China in meeting the challenge of the coronavirus outbreak and offered to provide assistance to the country.

India then put together relief supplies in pursuance of Modi's commitment as a token of India's solidarity, particularly in the 70th year of the anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"These supplies have been offered even as India faces tremendous shortage itself, given our ethos of helping others in their hour of need," said a source aware of the issue.

The items being supplied are gloves, surgical masks, feeding pumps and defibrillators based on the requirements as indicated by the Chinese side.

India's national carrier Air India has already evacuated around 640 Indians from Wuhan in two separate flights.

According to estimates, over 100 Indians are still living in Wuhan. A sizeable number of countries have evacuated their citizens from China and restricted movement of people and goods to and from the country in view of the massive outbreak of coronavirus there.

Indian nationals in Wuhan continue their long wait for the flight. The delay is causing them and their family members in India tremendous mental anguish, said the sources.

They said relief and evacuation flights from other countries including by France are allowed to operate by China but the permission has not come through in India's case.

"Are they not interested in Indian aid provided as our token of support? Why are they creating roadblock in evacuating our nationals from Wuhan and putting them under hardship and mental agony?" said a person aware of the issue.

New Delhi, May 30: The Congress on Friday described the first year of the Modi government as a "year of disappointment, disastrous management and diabolical pain".

Congress leader K C Venugopal said the six years of the Modi dispensation have seen fraying of bonds of empathy, fraternity and brotherhood with increase in acts of communal and sectarian violence.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that at the end of six years, it appears the Modi government is at war with its people and is inflicting wounds on them, instead of healing them.

"It is inflicting wounds on Mother India," he said.

"This government is trying to fill coffers of the select rich and is inflicting pain on the poor," Surjewala said.

On the BJP's charge of the Congress playing politics over the COVID-19 crisis, Venugopal said the opposition party did not indulge in any politics and gave suggestions instead.

"Being a responsible opposition, it is our duty to raise the problems faced by the common people. As opposition, we highlighted the failures of the government," he said.

Venugopal said the government "is totally insensitive" to the plight of migrant labourers and farmers.

Surjewala also demanded that a virtual session of Parliament be convened immediately to discuss pressing issues and the due process be set in motion for holding of meetings of various parliamentary committees.

Modi and his cabinet had taken oath on this day last year for a second term in office.
