New Delhi, Dec 2: Amid concerns raised by the Opposition parties over the security of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), the Election Commission of India (ECI) has admitted that the cameras installed at an EVM strong room in Madhya Pradesh did not work for over an hour.

According to reports, the CCTVs installed in the strong room did not function for over an hour due to an unprecedented power cut on Friday.

"A report obtained from the Bhopal Collector states that CCTV cameras and an LED display installed outside the strongroom did not function from 8.19 am to 9.35 am on 30.11.2018 due to failure of electricity supply," reported NDTV quoting the poll panel statement.

The EC also said that additional inverter and a generator have been installed to ensure continuous electricity supply and assured that the machines are perfectly safe. "Two cordons of security personnel have been deployed to prevent any wrongdoing," the EC said.

Meanwhile, Naib Tehsildar Rajesh Mehra has been suspended on recommendation of the District Electoral Officer for allegedly causing a delay of 48 hours for Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to reach strong room after polling.

On Friday, few Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers protested outside the strong room in Satna after a viral video showed an unknown person taking a carton inside the highly protected area.

The workers claimed that the state government was trying to tamper the EVMs. As part of the protest, the supporters even deflated the vehicles of the district administration. However, the district administration denied all the charges and stated that the EVMs were under the supervision of security personnel.

On Saturday, the Congress delegation met the Election Commission and raised concern over the security of EVMs inside strong rooms and their handling during the counting process in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and the alleged deletion of voters in Uttar Pradesh.

Madhya Pradesh went for voting on November 28, and the results will be announced on December 11.

New Delhi, Jan 11: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Friday said that he has never seen innocents like the Indian people, who believe the claims made by the government on the implementation of its programmes. The former Union Minister, addressing a literary event, said, "I have never seen innocents like the Indian people. If something appears on print (and named two newspapers also), we believe it. We believe anything."

Claims like all villages having been electrified in the country and toilets built for 99 per cent of families in India were being believed, he said.

Similar was the case of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana or PM-JAY is a flagship health care scheme of the Centre), he alleged.

Stating that his Delhi-based driver's father had to get a surgery done under the scheme, he said, however, it could not be performed.

"I asked him (car driver) if he had the Ayushman card and he showed a card and I told him to take it (to hospital). In hospital after hospital, they said they were not aware of anything like that (Ayushman scheme). But we believe that the Ayushman scheme has come to the whole of India," he said.

Further, he said "we believe that for any disease, treatment will be done (indicating the Ayushman scheme) without shelling out money. We are being innocents."

Many news items and data were contrary to the truth, he added.

The incident took place near the CDRI building in Lucknow's Hazratganj.

In the firing, Ranjit Bachchan's brother also suffered bullet injuries. He has been rushed to the trauma centre. Ranjit Bachchan was a resident of Gorakhpur.

The early morning shootout in the Uttar Pradesh capital's central area has caused tension in the area.

Dinesh Singh, DCP Central Lucknow, said, "The body has been identified as of Ranjit Bachchan, who had gone out on morning walk when some unknown assailant shot him. A police team has been formed and further investigation is being carried out."

Before being associated with the Mahasabha, Ranjit Bachchan was a Samajwadi Party member and was often spotted with former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
