Centre likely to order SIT probe into 1984 anti-Sikh violence

New Delhi, Feb 2: The Centre has indicated that it may order a fresh probe into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. This comes after a government-appointed panel recommended setting up a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the killings following the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi October 31, 1984.

sikhThe controversy surrounding several Congress leaders has not yet been put to rest. But the move by the Union government was immediately slammed by the opposition as it came just before the Delhi polls on February 7.

The government appointed a panel, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice (retd) G P Mathur on December 23 last year to look into the possibility of re-investigation of the 1984 riots.

The committee, which was given three months time, submitted its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh last week, recommending setting up of a SIT to probe the riots, which took place after assassination of Gandhi, the sources said.

The riots across the country claimed the lives of 3,325 people. Delhi accounted for 2,733 victims, while the rest were killed in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and other states.

Reacting to the development, opposition parties said that it was an attempt to influence voters in Delhi, which has a seizable chunk of Sikh population.

“It is deprecating. Justice cannot be an electoral gain. Is it only an electoral ploy or gimmick of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to woo voters ahead of polls? If it is so, then it is deprecating,” Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

He said the government woke up just before a week for Delhi elections. The Congress leader also said if fresh probe is ordered into anti-Sikh riots, similar actions should be taken with regard to riots in Gujarat, Muzaffarnagar and Mangolpuri in Delhi.

Aam Aadmi Party leader and senior advocate H S Phoolka said the “leak” about the move “appears to be a poll gimmick” as it has come on the eve of elections.“Nobody knows how many cases they are going to re-open. Nothing has come out. It seems it is like a joke,” Phoolka said.

Akali Dal leader and Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Committee chief Manjit Singh G K welcomed the move and said the SIT should be set up at the earliest.Phoolka also pointed out though the government announced about Rs 5 lakh compensation to the riots victims, only 17 people have received it till now.

The BJP had earlier demanded re-investigation into all anti-Sikh riot cases.Earlier, the Justice Nanavati Commission had recommended reopening of only four of the 241 cases closed by police.

New Delhi, May 21: As many as 5,609 new COVID-19 cases were reported in India in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases in the country to 1,12,359 according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of the total cases, 63,624 are active cases, 45,300 patients have been cured/discharged or have migrated and 3,435 deaths have been reported.

With 39,297 cases in total, Maharashtra remains the worst affected state in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu (13,191 cases), Gujarat (12,537 cases), and Delhi (11,088 cases).

The nationwide lockdown imposed as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of coronavirus has been extended till May 31.

Lucknow, Aug 2: Uttar Pradesh's cabinet minister for Technical Education Kamal Rani Varun succumbed to COVID-19 on Sunday at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Kamal Rani is the first minister in Uttar Pradesh to die after contracting coronavirus. She was 62.

On 18 July, the minister tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital.

She was later shifted to the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the minister's death.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, Adityanath said, "Kamal Rani Varun died on Sunday at around 9.30 am. She was an experienced and capable leader. She discharged her responsibilities with competence. She was a dedicated public representative, who was always working for the welfare of deprived and oppressed sections of the society."

Kamal Rani was the MLA from Ghatampur in Kanpur. She was also twice a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Adityanath has cancelled his visit to Ayodhya scheduled for the day, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said on Sunday.

New Delhi, Feb 3: In the third such incident inside of a week, two unidentified persons opened fire outside Gate No. 5 of Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday night, the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) said.

A statement issued by the committee, a group comprising students and alumni of the university formed to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, said the attackers were on a red Rcooty.

No one was injured in the attack. One of the miscreants was wearing a red jacket, the statement said.

"Firing has taken place at Gate No.5 of Jamia Millia Islamia right now by two unidentified persons. As per report, one of them was wearing a red jacket and driving a red Scooty having vehicle no. 1532 or 1534," the statement said.

Police said they were verifying the JCC's claims.

Asim Mohammed Khan, former Congress MLA from Okhla, said the incident occurred around 11.30 pm. "We heard the gunshot. That is when we stepped out to see and the two men left on a Scooty," a student said.

"We have taken down the vehicle number and called police," he added.

This is the third firing incident in the Jamia Nagar area in a week.

On Thursday, a minor fired at anti-CAA protesters marching towards Rajghat, injuring a student.

Two days later, a 25-year-old fired two rounds in air in Shaheen Bagh in Jamia Nagar. No one was hurt in the incident.

The incident on Sunday night triggered panic in the area. A police vehicle had reached the spot after the incident but was chased away by angry students.

Hundreds of students and locals gathered outside the university.

Many raised slogans against the Delhi Police. They also staged a dharna outside the Jamia Nagar police station.

Shezad Ahmed, a JMI student and resident of Zakir Nagar, said they were not even allowed to protest peacefully.

"We are not going to be deterred by such incidents. We will continue with our protest," he added.
