Centre ready to help solve Bengaluru traffic woes

Bengaluru: Feb 4: The Centre on Wednesday offered a helping hand to the State government to solve the vexed traffic problem in Bengaluru.

gadkeriSpeaking at the Invest Karnataka meet which began here on Wednesday, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said the Centre was ready to take up long-pending infrastructure projects, such as peripheral ring roads if the State government provides land.

“Industry leaders such as Azim Premji and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw recently urged me to do something to solve the traffic problem in Bengaluru. If the Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah) and the Public Works Minister (Mahadevappa) are ready to give land, we (Centre) are ready to give funds for infrastructure development,” he added.

Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu said the Centre would work with the State to implement the proposed sub-urban rail system.

Naidu also assured cooperation on elevated roads projects within the City and expansion of Metro network.

Besides, six cities and 27 small towns of the State have been selected under the Smart Cities and Amrut Cities projects, he added.

At a separate interaction programme in Bengaluru, Gadkari requested Town Planning and City Development K J George to submit a report and the profile of the kind of elevated roads that Bengaluru required.

Congestion

He said congestion and road density were a problem even for other metros and therefore his ministry had taken responsibility to address transport problems within metros.

He promised that his ministry would help to the extent it could, as strictly speaking, roads within cities did not come within the purview of the ministry.

Coronavirus lockdown in India has been extended till June 30 with more relaxations.

While the lockdown has been extended in containment zones, relaxations outside containment zones include reopening of religious places for public  from June 8. 

Hotels, restaurants and shopping malls also to open from June 8. Decision on opening educational institutions to be taken in July.

New Delhi, Jul 28: India on Wednesday reported 47,704 more COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country's count of coronavirus cases to 14,83,157, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of the total cases, there are 4,96,988 active cases in the country while the number of patients cured/discharged and migrated stands at 9,52,744.

With 654 deaths due to COVID-19 in the country reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll rises to 33,425.

The recovery rate among COVID-19 patients has increased to 64.23 per cent. The recoveries to deaths ratio is 96.6 per cent:3.4 per cent, informed the Centre.

As per the data provided by the Ministry, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state from the infection with 1,48,905 active cases and 13,656 deaths due to COVID-19. Tamil Nadu has a total of 53,703 active cases and 3,494 deaths.

Delhi has a total of 11,904 active cases and 3,827 deaths.

The Health Ministry further informed that more than 5 lakh COVID-19 tests were conducted in a single day over two consecutive days. On 26th July, India tested a total of 5,15,000 samples and on 27th July, a total of 5,28,000 samples were tested.

The total number of COVID-19 samples tested up to July 27 is 1,73,34,885 including 5,28,082 samples tested yesterday, said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

With the beginning of Ramzan just about 10 days away, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali, the chairperson of the Islamic Centre of India and the Imam of Aishbagh Eidgah has issued an advisory to people on how to observe Ramzan during the lockdown.

In his appeal, the Sunni cleric, who is a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), has urged people that the holy month of Ramzan is likely to begin from April 25. The lockdown may also be extended beyond April 14.

"In this case, it is advised that people observe roza (fast) and do iftar (meal to break the fast) in the evenings at their homes. There should be no congregational prayers in the mosque but only at homes. Only those who stay or are staying at a mosque should pray there and that too while maintaining adequate social distance," said Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali in a video message.

The cleric, in the 12-point advisory, has asked people to fast as is mandatory in Islam and to pray for the end of the pandemic, during the month of worship.

The advisory says that those who used to arrange for iftar of poor and needy persons at the mosque, should continue to do so this year as well but the food should be distributed to the needy.

"Those who conducted Iftar parties in Ramzan should give the money kept for it in charity. Not more than five people should be present at any time at a mosque," the cleric added.

Earlier for April 8 and April 9, both Shia and Sunni clerics had appealed to the people to stay indoors and pray on the occasion of Shab-e-Baraat, respectively. To ensure full compliance of the lockdown, the gates of several graveyards in the city were locked up by the caretakers since traditionally Muslims visit graves of their ancestors on Shab-e-Baraat--the night of Allah's forgiveness, to pray for their ancestors.
