'Centre ready to intervene if required on Cauvery row'

September 12, 2016

Bengaluru, Sep 12: Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti on Saturday said if required, the Centre will intervene in the Cauvery water release issue to Tamil Nadu.

umabhartim1She told reporters that the Centre will do justice to all and will also protect the interest of all states.

Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention to resolve the issue.

Karnataka Water Resources Minister M B Patil rejected the demand for changing the state’s legal team headed by Fali S Nariman.

“The Nariman-led team always worked hard to protect Karnataka's interest in the courts in inter-state water disputes. So, there is no question of replacing them,” he said. The minister was reacting to a demand from some quarters to replace the legal team for “failing to protect the interests of state” in the Cauvery issue.

The Karnataka legal team said, “There is nothing like winning or losing the case in water disputes. Every decision has some good and some bad parts.”

“We must know that primarily, the legal team is fighting the upper riparian's case which is an uphill task in courts because, the general perception in the world is that the upper riparian state can ruin the lower state by building dams or barrages and steal water. Despite this general bias, this legal team succeeded in reducing the liability to Tamil Nadu from 380 tmcft to 192 tmcft annually in Cauvery. We hope to reduce it further in the Supreme Court in the pending civil appeal,” Mohan Katarki, member of the legal team said in a statement.

“Karnataka could not have argued that we won't share water with Tamil Nadu or we don't owe any water to Tamil Nadu. The only point was - how much we owe to Tamil Nadu and when we owe. We said, what we owe should be determined by the Supervisory Committee and until it determines this, we propose, as a goodwill gesture, to ensure 10,000 cusecs for 10 days when already, on an average, 6,000 cusecs were going. It was a wise proposal and when the same proposal was made in September 2012, the Supreme Court had accepted it and everyone, including those who are taunting the legal team now, praised it,” he said.

Chennai, Jul 30: Tamil Nadu government on Thursday extended the Covid-19 lockdown till August 31, giving only a few relaxations like allowing delivery of non-essential goods by e-commerce sites. The ban on public transport has been extended till August 31, while availing of e-pass for inter-district and inter-state travel will continue to be in force.

In a detailed statement, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced a “complete lockdown” during which only essential services would continue to be in force on all Sundays during the month of August across the state.

In Chennai, restaurants will be allowed to open dine-in facilities at 50 percent of its total capacity from 6 am to 7 pm from August 1, while vegetable shops, grocery outlets and standalone commercial establishments will also be allowed to remain open from 6 am to 7 pm.

E-commerce sites have been allowed to begin delivery of non-essential goods from August 1, while the ban on public transport, temples in urban areas and towns, cinema halls, shopping malls, and gyms would continue till August 31.

It also said companies or factories in Chennai that have been allowed to function with 50 percent of staff can increase their strength to 75 percent from August 1.

The government also asked companies to encourage its employees to work from home and advised commercial establishments to follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) as advised by it. Inter-state or inter-district travel will be allowed only with e-pass, while ban on metro and suburban trains continues.

The decision to extend the lockdown till August 31 comes as Tamil Nadu continues to grapple with an increasing number of coronavirus cases. The prevalence of the virus is no more limited to one city or region of the state with almost all districts reporting fresh cases, some of them over 200 new patients, every day.

On Thursday morning, Tamil Nadu’s Covid-19 tally was 2,34,114 including 1,72,883 discharges and 3,741 deaths. The active cases stood at 57,490.

New Delhi, Jan 9: The Union government has removed the central security cover of Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam and DMK leader M K Stalin, officials said on Thursday.

They said while Paneerselvam had a smaller 'Y+' cover of central paramilitary commandos, Stalin had a larger 'Z+' protection.

The security cover of these two politicians has been taken off from the central security list after a threat assessment review was made by central security agencies and approved by the Union home ministry, they said.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandos were protecting these two leaders of Tamil Nadu.

However, they said, the central security cover will be formally taken off after the state police takes over their security task, they added.
