Dubai, Feb 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the Centre has saved Rs 56,000 crores through Aadhaar- enabled direct benefit transfer of about 400 government schemes.

Stating that technology plays a pivotal role in the growth of an economy, Modi said one tax structure or GST has been made possible in India only because of it.

In his keynote address at the World Government Summit in Dubai, he said the government's e-market programme of GEM has witnessed transactions worth Rs 4,500 crores in a very short span of time.

Government e-Marketplace is meant for online purchase of commonly used goods and services by various central government ministries and departments.

Modi said due to technology-enabled GEM, even smallest of traders can sell their goods using this platform.

He further said India is going through a revolution in digital payment space and fast moving towards a less cash economy.

Talking about Startup India mission, he said India is creating an ecosystem for innovation through this programme and the country has become a major startup nation in the last two years.

Stating that over 65 percent of India's population is below 35 years of age, Modi stressed the need to encourage the youth in the field of innovation while seeking international cooperation to realise the dream to create a "New India."

Modi said technology, which is changing at a speed of thought, has given a boost to his idea of 'minimum government and maximum governance' which today has changed the common man's life.

With regard to the role of technology in the government's aim to double farmers' income by 2022, he cited two examples.

First, the soil health card scheme, under which farmers get to know about the health of soil and second is the Krishi Mandi or e-NAM portal, a single window information services for farmers, which has seen transactions worth Rs 36,000 crores.

Ahmedabad, Mar 24: The Gujarat police has detained 426 people in the last 24 hours for violating lockdown rules in force in the state to combat the novel coronavirus outbreak, a senior official said on Tuesday.

They include those who came out despite being advised home quarantine, state Director General of Police Shivanand Jha said.

"The lockdown met with around 90 per cent success. We are taking strict measures to implement the lockdown in the remaining 10-15 per cent areas. We have lodged 238 cases related to the violation of police notification and 127 cases related to quarantine rule violation. In all, we have detained 426 persons across the state," Jha told reporters in Gandhinagar.

"For better implementation of the lockdown and to address issues concerning people, we have set up a dedicated 24-hour control room and appointed two additional DGP rank officers to supervise operations. Three teams under them would work to resolve issues across the state," said Jha.

He said police commissioners and districts SPs have been asked to enforce the lockdown in an effective manner.

Essential services like vegetable and milk shops are allowed to remain open, he said, and asked people not to flock in large numbers to such shops.

The state has so far reported 33 COVID-19 cases, and one person has died of the infection.

Jul 2: Democratic presidential candidate and former US vice-president Joe Biden has said that if he wins the November elections, strengthening the relationship with India which is America’s "natural partner", will be a high priority for his administration.

"India needs to be a partner in the region for our safety's sake and quite frankly for theirs," he said in response to a question on India-US relationship during a virtual fundraiser event on Wednesday.

At the fundraiser hosted by Chairman and CEO of Beacon Capital Partners Alan Leventhal, the former vice president said that India and the United States were natural partners.

"That partnership, a strategic partnership, is necessary and important in our security," Biden said when asked by an attendee whether India is critical to the US' national security.

Referring to his eight years as the vice president, he said, "In our administration, I was proud to play a role more than a decade ago in securing Congressional approval for the US-India Civil Nuclear Agreement, which is a big deal".

"Helping open the door to great progress in our relationship and strengthening our strategic partnership with India was a high priority in the Obama-Biden administration and will be a high priority if I'm elected president,” Biden said.

Both as the vice president and a senator from Delaware, he was a big supporter of India-US relationship.

About the November polls, Biden said that the character of the country is on the ballot. The upcoming election is the most important poll of a lifetime and that the country is currently engaged in a battle for its soul, he claimed.

Biden also slammed President Donald Trump and his administration over the handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Trump ignored warnings from the very beginning, refused to prepare and failed to protect the country. Not just now but throughout his presidency, undermining the very core pillars of ours, what I would argue, moral and economic strength.

"I really do believe that our country is crying out for leadership and maybe even more important, some healing. Today, we have an enormous opportunity not only to rebuild but to build back better than before. To build a better future. That's what America does," he added.
