Centre's ban on sale of cattle for slaughter is denial of state's rights: CM

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said the Centre's move to ban the sale of cattle for slaughter infringes on the state's rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

Speaking after inaugurating the oath-taking ceremony for newly appointed state Youth Congress office-bearers, he said; “Cow slaughter comes under the state list...It is my right to decide the food that I want to eat and the cloth that I want to wear. It is unconstitutional to take away this right.”

Old cattle are a burden on farmers. At least 10 kg of fodder is required per day to keep each old head of cattle alive. This will adversely affect the farmers' finances. The Centre's move will badly hit the agriculture sector. The Centre is not aware of these consequences, he said.

“Are we not Hindus? Are Muslims and Christians not Hindustanis?...The BJP is trying to mislead people by playing on the emotions of innocent people. It talks of sabka saat, sabka vikas, but it is keeping Muslims, Christians and Dalits away. Youth should never get carried away by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's misleading speech,” he stated.

KPCC president G Parameshwara warned that the party will not tolerate indiscipline. It will not hesitate to take action against those who indulge in anti-party activities, he added.

Four of the five newly elected vice presidents of the state Youth Congress submitted their resignation letters, protesting the party's decision to allow the swearing-in of new office-bearers despite reports of malpractice in the recently held elections. Rajendra, Sumaya Tabrez, Shivakumar, Kemparaju (all vice presidents) and Umesh Bore Gowda (general secretary) handed over their resignation letters to Indian Youth Congress president Amrinder Singh at the KPCC office, sources in the party said.

Mangaluru, May 17: Former health minister U T Khader demanded that the authorities carry out a scientific analysis of the five deaths that occurred due to Covid-19 in Dakshina Kannada. 

“The number of fatalities vis-à-vis the number of positive cases in the district is worrying, and the district administration and health department should not take the matter lightly. Lapses, if any, in dealing with the co-morbidity factors should be addressed, lest it become a major health challenge,” he warned.

Addressing reporters on Saturday, Khader, said only carrying out such types of analysis will help the health department combat the spread of the novel coronavirus in the future. “At present, the only data available with the health authorities here and in the state war room, is the number of people tested and number of positive cases,” Khader said.

“Any strategy to combat Covid-19 must be built around scientific analysis of causes of how the disease is spreading and to do so, concrete efforts must be made to find the source of the cluster at the First Neuro Hospital in Padil. A analysis of reasons that caused the deaths, will also come in handy for the authorities to prepare suitable advisories for the people, who in turn could take informed decisions,” Khader noted.

Mangaluru, July 29: Justifying the transfer of Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, district in-charge minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari has accused Mangaluru MLA U T Khader of politicizing the issue. 

The IAS officer was transferred by the Karnataka government on July 28, a day after a saffron activist issued a death threat against her on social media after she warned of legal action against the miscreants who attack cattle traders.

Condemning the development, Mr Khader had tweeted that the state government has punished the deputy commissioner instead of punishing the culprit, who issued death threat.

Responding to Mr Khader’s tweet, Mr Poojari said that the transfer of the officer was on administrative ground. “It is unfortunate that Khader politicized a transfer carried out by the government on administrative ground. This is not Khader’s time to protect any accused,” tweeted Mr Poojari. 

It is worth mentioning here that Mr Khader was the district in-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada before Mr Poojari taking over the position. 

Meanwhile, police has arrested a person in connection with the death threat against the IAS officer.

Bengaluru, Jan 7: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths held an international bookie in connection with the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) betting scam and spot-fixing racket, police said on Tuesday.

The bookie was identified as Jitin Sait (32), a native of Sonipat in Haryana.

'We had obtained and issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Sait, and on Sunday, he was caught after he landed at the Kempegowda International Airport from the Netherlands.
