Charmadi Ghat closed for a month; all types of vehicles banned till Sept 14

Mangaluru, Aug 15: The Charmadi Ghat, which connects coastal Karnataka with Chikkamagaluru, is unlikely to open soon as the experts have hinted that it may take a month to fix the road devastated by rains, floods and landslides.

After a meeting with authorities concerned including executive engineer, National Highway division, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil has ordered for the closure of Charmadi Ghat road for a month and ban movement of all types of vehicles till September 14.

Traffic has been diverted from Ujire-Dhamasthala-Kokkada-Gundya-Shiradi (NH-75) and from Mudigere Handpost to Jannapura- Anemahal- Shiradi- Gundya-( NH-75).

It may be recalled that the DC had announced closure of the ghat road for vehicles till August 14. Charmadi Ghat road on the Mangaluru-Villupuram National Highway -73 (formerly NH-234) has been receiving very heavy rainfall since the second week of August. Due to storms and continuous heavy rain, several areas have been affected due to landslips and uprooting of trees on the ghat stretch.

Roads have caved in at several locations. At km 93.15, the carriageway has scoured to a depth of around 60 metres. At km 93.9, the guard wall collapsed. Thus, travelling on the ghat road could be risky, and in case of road blocks, clearance of debris becomes a challenge.

Hence, the executive engineer, National Highway Division, Mangaluru, has suggested closure of the ghat road. The DC has issued directions under section 115 of Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and rule 221 A (5) of 1989, in this regard.

Bengaluru, Jun 25: In the wake of unexpected surge in the coronavirus positive cases in Bengaluru, the special task force team assigned with the task of creating Covid Care Centres (CCC) has made elaborate arrangements the Haj Bhavan.

Civic authorities have already shifted around 50 Covid-19 patients to Haj Bhavan. 

BBMP Commissioner B H Anil Kumar said on Thursday that due to an increase in the number of cases and due to shortage of beds in hospitals, the Haj Bhavan has been converted into CCC.

Headed by Rajendar Kumar Kataria, Secretary, Horticulture and Sericulture department, the CCC task force has arranged 400 beds at Haj Bhavan. 

“The facility at Haj Bhavan has already been made operational. Doctors, nurses, paramedical and house-keeping staff from BBMP have been deployed as per SOPs. All essential equipment, medicines and other facilities have been made available in adequate numbers at the Haj Bhavan,” Kataria explained.

In the second phase, the task force team has identified hostel rooms of seven engineering colleges, which would fetch about 3,200 beds to house asymptomatic Covid-19 patients. 

If need arises, the task team in the third and final phase, will consider the facilities such as Palace Grounds, Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre, Indoor Stadiums at Kanteerava and Koramangala to be converted as CCC.

Mangaluru, Aug 1: A teenage boy, who was critically injured in a road accident at Manchi village in Bantwal taluk, breathed his last at a private hospital in the city today.

The victim has been identified as Mohammad Unais (17), a resident of Bolanthoor village.  

The mishap occurred yesterday (July 31) at around 6 p.m. when Unais was riding a motorbike.

In his bid to overtake a speeding lorry near the Manchi mosque, the boy lost control over his motorbike, which first rammed into an auto-rickshaw and then collided with the same lorry. 

The impact was such that the boy was thrown onto the road. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru. 

He breathed his last early today without responding to any treatment. 

A case has been registered at jurisdictional Melkar Traffic Police Station and investigations are on.

Mangaluru  Mar 27: Thinking that he might have contracted the coronavirus infection, a 55-year-old man has committed suicide in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

The deceased has been identified as Sadashiva Shetty, a resident of Abbettu under Meramajalu village. He was working in a petrol bunk.

It is learnt that Sadashiva suspected that he might have come in contact with coronavirus infected people while working in the petrol bunk.

He was scared that the same might get transferred to his family members through him. 

He was depressed for past few days. Today, he hanged himself from the ceiling fan of his house, sources said.

A case has been regarded at the Bantwal rural police station and investigations are on.
