Kanyakumari, 30, of Mudigere in Chikkamagaluru, her husband Shivu aka Jnanadev of Bengaluru and Chennamma aka Suma, 32, of Gadag surrendered to the members of the state-appointed panel, AK Subbaiah and Gaurilankesh. The trio then proceeded to the Chikkamagaluru deputy commissioner's office, accompanied by Subbaiah and Gaurilankesh.

The DC G Sathyavathi, and Chikkamagaluru superintendent of police K Annamalai, respectively the chairperson and convenor of the district-level committee on Naxalite assimilation, presented the three of them in front of the media and announced that rehabilitation programme would commence soon.

While Kanyakumari, against whom there are 33 cases pending, was taken into police custody and will be produced in court on Tuesday, Chennamma, who has been acquitted in the three cases that were filed against her, is free. Shivu, whose only involvement in the operation has been through his association with Kanyakumari, too has no cases against him and will not be produced in court.

Chennamma's husband Neelamegham was arrested by Tamil Nadu police two years ago, and is still in prison. Chennamma appealed to the Karnataka government to facilitate her husband's release.

Shivu and Kanyakumari wed in 2016, and the couple now has a six-month-old son.

As many as 13 Naxals have surrendered in Chikkamagaluru since 2010, and have successfully integrated themselves with the mainstream. Hagalaganchi Venkatesh, Mallika, Jaya, Sirimane Nagaraj and Noor Zulfikar are some of the prominent Naxalites who have surrendered in Chikkamagalur in the past seven years.

"Our aim is to free Karnataka from Naxalism. The method they have chosen to fight injustice in the society is not correct. They can join the mainstream with no sense of fear," said Subbaiah.

Sathyavathi pointed out that the government was offering a relief package to those who were laying down arms. "Meanwhile, authorities are trying to address the issues against which Naxals have taken up a fight. Instead of frittering away their lives in the forest, Naxals can fight for a cause through legal means. They must understand this and surrender to the government," she added.

Kanyakumari's crime history

Kanyakumari has as many as 33 pending cases against her, including attempt to murder, illegal possession of arms and dacoity. Kanyakumari's sister Yashoda was also a Naxal. Yashoda was injured in the Idu encounter in 2003. While 15 cases against Kanyakumari were filed in Chikkamagaluru, 17 were registered in Udupi and one in Shivamogga. All cases were booked against her between 2003 and '10. Police announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for anyone who had information about Kanyakumari in 2010.

New Delhi, Mar 2: The bloodthirsty arsonists allegedly hired by pro-CAA politicians in the capital of India to target Muslims, did not spare even the house of a Muslim leader of BJP.

Akhtar Raza, the BJP’s minority cell vice-president for the Delhi Northeast district, is now not in a position to share his pain with anyone.

Even the police hadn’t come to his rescue, when the mob raising “Jai Sri Ram” slogans burnt down his house at Bhagirathi Vihar Nalla Road in northeast Delhi last week.

“They were chanting slogans. Around 7pm, they started throwing stones at us. I called for police help. But the police asked me to leave. We managed to flee before they burnt my house and destroyed everything,” Raza, who returned today to witness the destruction, told media persons.

“Those who attacked us were not locals. They were outsiders. They managed to identify and burn down all the 19 houses belonging to Muslims in this lane,” Raza said.

Apart from all the belongings in the house of Raza, the arsonists also have burnt down six vehicles belonging to his family.

Raza is sad that no one from BJP contacted him after the violence even though he has been serving the party and promoting its ideology for past five years. “No party leader contacted me. There was no phone call. There was no relief or special treatment or anything,” Raza said.

Interestingly, Raza is still indentifies himself as a BJP leader. “I belonged to BJP. I may continue in the party,” he said.

The locality remained tense on Sunday too. On Monday, several groups distributed relief materials among people who had queued up to collect them. In front of Raza’s house is a lane from which several bodies of innocent Muslims have been recovered.

Hubballi, Mar 25: The people living in rural areas of North-Karnataka region have become more aware about deadly Corona virus as they are leaving no stone unturned to prevent people of Bengaluru and other metropolitan cities from entering into their villages. People have put thorny plants on all roads at the outskirts connecting their villages and deployed youths to conduct patrolling round the clock till next 21 days.

Their motto is to prevent their own villagers getting infected from the outsiders especially from cities like Bengaluru and other two-tier cities where positive virus cases are on the rise. They have also take precautionary measures in the wake of Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa's call to the people to return to their native places.

Several people have also dug up the roads leading to their villages to block the entry of outside vehicles. They have put a condition to the outsiders to enter into their villages only after proper health check-up to confirm that they are not infected with Corona positive.

"We don't have access to the proper medical care if Corona virus is entered into our village. The Primary Health Centres are not functioning properly and these centers are facing lack of adequate staff and medical equipments unlike in big cities. Therefore, those who have deserted our village to employ in various jobs in Bengaluru and other cities should confirm that they are tested negative for the virus", said Mallikarjun Patil of Kudal village in Hangal taluk of Haveri district. The village has totally banned the outsiders into their village and warned their fellow villagers to return immediately if they have visited to their relatives' homes in neighboring villages to observe 21-day lockdown.

Hundreds of youths in Itanal village of Chikkodi taluk of Belagavi have also resorted to similar tactics and patrolling in all roads at the outskirts by holding sticks to prevent outsiders from entering into their village until April 14.

People of Hunagunti village in Ron taluk and Kotamuchagi village in Gadag taluk have also adopted similar plan by parking tractors at th outskirts to prohibit the entry of outsiders. They have also created awareness in their villages by beating drums urging the people not to venture outside village for next three weeks.

The police officials have resorted to lati-charge at various places in urban areas when people gathered in large numbers to buy essential commodities.
