Mangaluru, Feb 8: The coastal city of Mangaluru has registered the second highest number of cases under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO)?Act – after Bengaluru – in Karnataka.

kidsRevealing this fact in an event Rev Sr Dulcin Crasta, director, Resource and Development Centre on Child Rights, appealed to parents to keep an eye for anything unusual in the behaviour of their sons or daughters.

“The 3,000 odd cases registered under POCSO Act in Karnataka is only the tip of the iceberg,” Sr Crasta said. She said that in 98 per cent of the cases, the children would have been sexually abused by persons known to them.

Quoting a survey that refuted the general notion that it was always men who abuse girl children, she said that 53 per cent of women abuse male children as against 27 per cent of men who abuse female children.

She mentioned the survey and its study results at a seminar on ‘Issues and Concerns Regarding Women and Children’, organised by the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) at St Aloysius College in the City on Sunday.

“The abuse takes place only at the fourth or fifth level – that is, much after the abuser (usually a person close to the family) takes the child into confidence. The victim (child) will also never reveal the act to anybody, mostly out of fear that nobody would believe his or her accusations,” said the director.

“It is the responsibility of every citizen to bring any incident of child sexual abuse to the knowledge of the authorities concerned. If a person comes to know about acts of sexual abuse on a child and if the person does not inform the authorities concerned, then the person too is to be considered party to the crime,” she warned, quoting the seriousness of the POCSO?Act, which is tried in a special court to get quick justice.

It is not Siddu who is responsible for child abuse, yes it is central government it should come up with stricketest law against child abusers...its an unforgivable crime....need to change the mind set of people also...those who indulge in this type of crime are psychos....children's should be educated properly since kindergarden level itself....

Kannur, Jan 23: A member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has been arrested for attempting to create unrest in Kerala by hurling crude bombs at RSS office and police picket. The miscreants had reportedly planned to pass the blame on others.

The bomb attack took place of January 16 in Kerala’s Kannur. The accused Prabesh, an RSS hardliner, was arrested from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

According to the Kerala police Prabesh hurled steel bombs towards the police picket in front of Kathirur Manoj Smrithi Kendram, an RSS office.

"He threw bombs during the wee hours of January 16 morning. Following the arrest he has confessed that his aim was RSS office. Kannur, being politically sensitive region, any attack on political party offices will be regarded as an act by the opponent," Kathirur SI Nijeesh said.

"We had a police picket in the region for a few months now. We are assuming he wanted to create unrest in the area by removing the police from the spot. We could contain the situation because of the CCTV visuals. He was identified immediately after the incident. Following the attack he went to Coimbatore and was hiding there. Our team nabbed him from Coimbatore," he said.

The police have also said that the accused Prabesh had many criminal cases pending against him including those under Explosive Substances Act, 1883. He was nabbed by a team lead by Kathirur SI Nijeesh, CPO Rohith and Vijeesh.

The RSS office in the region is named after Kathirur Manoj a senior karyakarta (worker) who was allegedly killed by the CPI(M) activists in 2014. Kathirur Manoj was the prime accused in the attempt to murder of senior CPI(M) leader P Jayarajan in 1999.

Kalaburagi, May 16: Former Karnataka Minister Dr Sharanprakash Patil, who was booked for violating COVID-19 imposed lockdown guidelines said on Friday that it was "politically motivated".

"It's politically motivated, the officer who filed the case was forced by MLA or some other people. As elected representatives, we're going in the constituencies, listening to people as they're apprehensive about the return of migrants. We had not conducted any meeting. Wherever we have gone we have followed social distancing," Patil said.

Patil said, "When I had gone there people came to discuss about a local problem and I was talking to an official concerned. In the meantime, some officer gave a complaint that we have violated the lockdown or something."

"They are trying to curb the voice of opposition because there are a lot of lacunae. We hear complaints about quarantine centres that there is no proper facility for food, or stay, or bathrooms," the Congress leader said.

The FIR was registered on Thursday against 23 persons, including the former MLA and 21 local Congress leaders, under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Congress leader Patil and his followers had conducted a meeting at a convention hall in Sulpeth town on May 13, following which sectoral magistrate Muneer Ahmed lodged a complaint.
