Chile knocks out world champion Spain and survives group of death

June 19, 2014

Rio de Janeiro, Jun 19: It took 11 games, three world cups and 64 years, but Chile has finally defeated its colonial master in the beautiful game and, in doing so, sent the reigning world champion Spain crashing out of Brazil 2014.

Predictions of a “kamikaze” style offensive Chile looked spot on in the opening minutes as “La Roja” talisman Alexis Sánchez created two genuine chances in the opening two minutes of the match. But, against all odds, it was the South Americans’ desperation and desire at the back which won this most crucial of games.

Chile knocks outCoach Jorge Sampaoli may have swapped a four-man defensive line for three at the back on paper, but for large parts of the game wingers Eugenio Mena and Mauricio Isla fortified a backline which refused to be trumped by a Spanish side running rampant in the middle of the pitch.

The new addition to Chile’s defense, Francisco Silva, played a pivotal role in holding the the likes of Diego Costa, Pedro and Andrés Iniesta goalless, and his distribution was also excellent. Defensive partners Gary Medel and Gonzalo Jara also had a big night, but Chile owes its clean sheet to its inspirational captain and keeper Claudio Bravo, who ruled the goal area with authority, consistently putting himself in the right position, blocking when necessary and grabbing the ball when possible.

In contrast, his counterpart and opposing captain Iker Casillas was not decisive enough to prevent Chile’s second and winning goal. Sánchez fired in a free kick in a dangerous position on 43 minutes which went over the wall but should have been dealt with by the Spanish keeper, who instead palmed it directly ahead to a lurking Charles Aránguiz. The former go-to-man in Sampaoli’s illustrious Universidad de Chile team controlled the ball on the edge of the box and slotted home what would be the game’s decisive goal from the edge of the box.

A teammate from that three-time domestic and one-time Copa Sudamericana winning side, Eduardo Vargas, scored the first. As Chile fans are now well accustomed to, it was a Sánchez through ball which set up play, but Aránguiz provided a quality cross to “Edu,” who made a first touch which left Casillas stranded and tapped home in his signature easy-as-they-come style.

Faced with imminent elimination from the tournament which was meant to be the swan song of the greatest generation of footballers in the modern age, Spain held nothing back in looking for the goals which would salvage its campaign after a 5-1 humbling at the hands of the Netherlands.

But “La Roja,” playing the deepest defensive line that Chile fans have seen since Sampaoli took the reigns at the end of 2012, held firm, thumping the ball forward when necessary and taking on their more fancied opponents as if their lives depended on it.

Two games into this most exciting of world cups, the jury is still out as to whether Sampaoli’s consistent lineup changes at the back represent unparalleled tactical genius or a scramble to make up for the fact he has a large deficit of defensive quality. What is clear, however, is that his leadership, along with the likes of Sánchez, Bravo and a recovering but inspirational Arturo Vidal, are driving this squad to victories against more fancied opponents, or when the team is not delivering its swashbuckling promise against lesser squads.

Whatever the case, Chile has now survived the group of death, and will play for top spot Monday against a Dutch team which Australia made look defeatable and which will be without the inimitable forward presence of Robin Van Persie, thanks to two consecutive yellow cards.

The two teams will play for top spot in a group which no team envied, with number one playing number two in Group A, and vice versa. But Brazil’s place at number one in its group is no longer assured, thanks to a brave draw by the Mexicans, and Chile will not be thinking about who it will play next but, instead, stamping its authority on the world game by topping the toughest group in the Brazil 2014.

New Delhi, Jun 13: Five centrally contracted Indian cricketers including Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul have been issued notices by National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for failing to disclose their whereabouts as the BCCI cited "password glitch" as the reason for delay.

The other players to have received the notice include women stars Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma, who are among the five cricketers in the 110 strong National Registered Testing Pool (NRTP). Speaking to PTI, NADA DG Navin Agarwal confirmed that BCCI has sent an official explanation for their five NRTP players' failure to submit whereabouts.

"There are two ways to fill up the whereabouts form in the ADAMS (Anti Doping Administration & Management Systems) software. Either athlete does it himself or association fills it up on his or her behalf," Agarwal said. "Now athletes in some discipline aren't educated enough or do not have access to internet and find themselves unable to handle the whereabouts clause of the ADAMS or upload the filled up

"They use assistance of their concerned federations. So federations have accepted responsibility of uploading their whereabouts," Agarwal said.

He said cricketers too at times find it tough to complete the process on their own. "Similarly in cricket also, although these people are well qualified and they can do it, perhaps they don't have the time for whatever reasons, so the federation concerned, the BCCI has taken upon itself the responsibility of uploading their whereabouts." So why didnt BCCI upload the the three-month whereabouts this time?

"Well they have given an explanation which appears to be reasonable but a decision will be taken. They have said that there has been a glitch with regards to password in ADAMS. Now they have said that issue has been resolved," Agarwal added. NADA DG added that "BCCI's explanation will be discussed as to whether it will be counted as one of three filing failures or not. It will be decided on the explanation given and how they (BCCI) proceed from here."

While country has been under lockdown, the rule to submit three months of whereabouts is mandatory. Three such failures to disclose leads to one Anti Doping Rule Violation (ADRV), which could lead up to two years of suspension upon hearing.

While BCCI has "officially gagged" its employees from talking to the media, it couldn't be ascertained that why as normal a glitch as a password error took days to resolve. A BCCI veteran, who has been privy to cricket operations, asked why the five cricketers were not told to upload the form themselves.

"This was lockdown period where they are not living out of suitcases. Some of the names have also engaged in multiple instagram chats and podcasts which their agents are managing," he said.

"If cricket operations team were having a glitch in fixing password, well the five cricketers could have been asked to do so and they would have done it individually with some guidance. "Probably NADA would be lenient this time but if it becomes an official warning, then who's responsible," he added.

Bengaluru, Jun 2: Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal has said that he was ashamed on seeing the training regime of Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

Iqbal said that the incident happened two-three years back as he thought to himself that why he cannot do the same even when he is the same age as Kohli.

"I must say this, it is not because I am talking to an Indian commentator, India is our neighbour so whatever things they do, it affects Bangladesh as well. We follow what is happening in India, when India changed its approach towards fitness, it impacted Bangladesh the most," Iqbal told Sanjay Manjrekar in a videocast hosted by ESPNCricinfo.

"I have no shame in admitting this, when I saw Virat Kohli running around two-three years ago, I was ashamed of myself, I thought this is a guy who is probably my age, but he is training so much and I have not doing even half of it. We have a great example in our team as well, Mushfiqur Rahim manages himself well regarding fitness," he added.

During his initial days of international cricket, Kohli was fond of chicken which he has admitted several times during media interaction.

But in 2013, the 31-year-old batsman intentionally shifted his focus to fitness, diet, and training.

Now he has become punctual about his diet which has given him a different character on and off the field.

The comparisons between Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar have also kept on growing and many have picked the current Indian skipper to break the records set by Tendulkar.

Tendulkar managed to call time on his career after registering 100 international centuries, while Kohli currently has 70 centuries across all formats.

Currently, Kohli is ranked at the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings while he is in the second place in Tests rankings.

Mumbai, Jan 24: Former Indian cricket captain and former MP Mohammad Azharuddin on Thursday denied allegations of cheating levelled by a travel agency in Maharashtra and threatened to file defamation suit of ₹100 crore.

"Those who filed the FIR have done it only to be in the limelight. There is no truth in it. The allegations are baseless," Azharuddin said in a video message on Twitter.

Azahruddin, who is now president of Hyderabad Cricket Association, said he would soon seek advice from his lawyer and will file Rs 100 crore defamation case against those who lodged the FIR.

A case was filed in Aurangabad on Wednesday against Azharuddin and two others for allegedly cheating a local travel agent of around ₹21 lakh.

The complaint was lodged by Shahab Y. Mohammed, 49, proprietor of Danish Tours & Travels here, a former executive with the defunct Jet Airways.

"We have lodged a first information report against Mujeeb Khan (Aurangabad), Sudheesh Avikkal (Kerala), Mohammed Azharuddin (Hyderabad). No arrests have been made and further investigations are underway," Investigating Officer A.D. Nagre, of the City Chowk police station, told IANS.

According to the complainant, between November 9 and 12, 2019, Avikkal booked several international airline tickets and Azharuddin's personal secretary Mujeeb Khan promised to pay the ticket charges. He said since no payment was made, he was compelled to lodge the police complaint.
