Surguja, Jun 19: A case has been registered against former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh's son Abhishek Singh, a former MP, and 19 others on the charge of cheating in connection with an alleged chit fund scam in Surguja district of the state, police said Tuesday.

Former BJP MP Madhusudan Yadav and Congress leader Naresh Dakaliya have also been booked in the case.

Abhishek, Yadav and Dakaliya had allegedly acted as star campaigners for the company, which functioned in various districts of the state before shutting its operations during the year 2016.

Nobody is arrested in the case so far.

"Apart from Abhishek, Yadav and Dakaliya, 17 directors and core committee members of the Anmol India Company were booked Monday at Ambikapur City Kotwali police station on a complaint lodged by an investor-cum-agent Prem Sagar Gupta (67)," said Inspector General of Police (Surguja range) KC Agrawal.

Gupta had filed a petition in a local court earlier alleging that police had failed to act on his complaint against those allegedly involved in the scam, he said, adding that the court last month ordered police to investigate the matter and submit a final report.

On the direction of the court, all the 20 accused were booked under sections 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Chhattisgarh Protection of Depositors Interest Act 2005, the IG said.

He said some FIRs were already lodged in connection with the chit fund scam in which several people lost their hard-earned money in Surguja district.

The IG said all the cases would be probed in a centralised manner by a special team.

Another police official said seven accused--Md Javed Memon, Sapura Memon, Md Junaid Memon, Nilofar Bano, Md Khalid Memon, Nadiya Bano and Hajiumar Memon--are natives of Nagpur in neighbouring Maharashtra.

He said Faitma Bano and Hamid Memon, who hail from Raipur, and Sibu Khan of Rajnandgaon were directors of the company.

Seven other accused, who are natives of various districts in Chhattisgarh, were working as core committee members of the company in the state and were engaged in running a publicity campaign to attract investors, the official said.

Abhishek, Yadav, also a former MP from Rajnandgaon, and Dakaliya, a former Mayor of Rajnandgaon, had allegedly acted as star campaigners for the company which functioned in various districts of the state since 2008, he added.

"As per the complaint, the three star campaigners did publicity for the company and convinced people to invest," he said.

In his complaint, Gupta,a native of Ambikapur, had alleged that the company embezzled the amount of Rs 98,876 which he had deposited in the firm after selling out his property, the official said.

The company had assured the investors to double their money within a few months, but no benefit was provided to investors, the official said quoting the complaint.

He said the company instead shut its operations in 2016, cheating the investors of several lakh rupees.

Meanwhile, Abhishek denied having any connection with the company.

"I never had any connection with the Company. The matter will not stand in the court," he told media.

New Delhi, May 17: Spelling out the government’s fourth tranche of initiatives towards achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday announced significant structural reforms in eight sectors of the economy — coal, minerals, defense production, aviation, power distribution in Union territories, space and atomic energy.

Addressing her fourth and the second-last press conference, Sitharaman said crucial sectors such as coal production and exploration, defence production and space would see an increased participation from private entities.

Coal sector:

In the realm of coal exploration, the government has decided to liberalise the entry norms for private entities, which would mean that any interested party could bid for a coal block and sell it in the open market. The minister said that the government would do away with all the eligibility conditions at the time of bidding for a coal block, except requiring an “upfront payment with a ceiling.”

Nearly 50 coal blocks would be offered to private players immediately, revealed Sitharaman.

She further said that Rs 50,000 crore would be spent by Centre in creating ‘coal evacuation’ infrastructure, which would expedite the transport of mined product to the destination.

Defence sector:

In defence production, Sitharaman revealed that the government would raise the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the sector from current 49 per cent to 74 per cent. Further, the government would also work towards corporatising the ordnance factory boards. “Corporatising doesn’t amount to privatization,” added Sitharaman.

In a bid to boost indigenous production of defence products and gave an impetus to Make in India, Sitharaman said that the government was in a process of notifying a list of weapons/platforms for an import ban with year-wise timelines.

These decisions would also help in reducing huge import bills, the finance minister said.

Privatisation of electricity:

In another announcement that could have an effect on electricity charges in the union territories, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Saturday that power departments and utilities in all the centrally administered territories would be privatised.

Sitharaman said that the proposed move would lead to better service to consumers and improvement in operational and financial efficiency in distribution.

The finance minister said that decision was guided by 'sub-optimal' utilisation of performance of power distribution and supply'.

She said that the move to that effect would provide a model for emulation by other utilities across the country, in what could be an indicator of what's in the pipeline for utilities in other states as well.

Sitharaman said that the privation reform was in line with the tariff policy reforms and would help in enhancing consumer rights, promote industry and improve the overall sustainability of the sector.

Space sector:

Sitharaman also announced the opening up of the space exploration sector for private players. Till date, the government-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has held a monopoly on all activities concerning space exploration and satellite launches.

The Indian private sector will be a co-traveller in India's space sector journey, said Sitharaman, while announcing a series of structural reforms in eight crucial areas of the economy. The Union Finance Minister was addressing her fourth press conference in as many days, as a follow-up towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'atmanirbhar Bharat', which was spelled out in his video address on May 12.

Sitharaman said that the reforms in the space sector will provide a level-playing field for private companies in satellite launches and space-based services.

She said that the private sector would be allowed to use ISRO facilities and other assets to improve their capacities. Stating that the government would provide predictable policy and regulatory environment to private players, Sitharaman also disclosed that future projects for planetary exploration and outer space travel among others would be opened up for private entities.

New Delhi, Jun 27: Fuel prices were hiked by the oil marketing companies for the 21st day in a row on Saturday. Petrol and diesel will now cost Rs 80.38/litre and Rs 80.40/litre respectively in the national capital.

The price of petrol is increased by Rs 0.25 per litre while that of diesel by Rs 0.21 per litre.
Rates differ from state to state depending on the incidence of value-added tax (VAT).

Notably, oil marketing companies have been adjusting retail rates in line with costs after an 82-day break from rate revision amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. These firms on June 7 restarted revising prices in line with costs.

The Congress party had called the increase in the price of petrol and diesel 'unjust', 'thoughtless' and demanded from the Central government to roll back increase with immediate effect and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the citizens of this country.
In an official statement, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) had said that no government should levy and impose such unacceptable strain on its people.

Before the nation entered the lockdown, the average price of petrol and diesel in Delhi was Rs 69.60 per litre and Rs 62.30 per litre respectively.

New Delhi, Feb 3: In the third such incident inside of a week, two unidentified persons opened fire outside Gate No. 5 of Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday night, the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) said.

A statement issued by the committee, a group comprising students and alumni of the university formed to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, said the attackers were on a red Rcooty.

No one was injured in the attack. One of the miscreants was wearing a red jacket, the statement said.

"Firing has taken place at Gate No.5 of Jamia Millia Islamia right now by two unidentified persons. As per report, one of them was wearing a red jacket and driving a red Scooty having vehicle no. 1532 or 1534," the statement said.

Police said they were verifying the JCC's claims.

Asim Mohammed Khan, former Congress MLA from Okhla, said the incident occurred around 11.30 pm. "We heard the gunshot. That is when we stepped out to see and the two men left on a Scooty," a student said.

"We have taken down the vehicle number and called police," he added.

This is the third firing incident in the Jamia Nagar area in a week.

On Thursday, a minor fired at anti-CAA protesters marching towards Rajghat, injuring a student.

Two days later, a 25-year-old fired two rounds in air in Shaheen Bagh in Jamia Nagar. No one was hurt in the incident.

The incident on Sunday night triggered panic in the area. A police vehicle had reached the spot after the incident but was chased away by angry students.

Hundreds of students and locals gathered outside the university.

Many raised slogans against the Delhi Police. They also staged a dharna outside the Jamia Nagar police station.

Shezad Ahmed, a JMI student and resident of Zakir Nagar, said they were not even allowed to protest peacefully.

"We are not going to be deterred by such incidents. We will continue with our protest," he added.
