Chouhan tried to suppress Vyapam scam, alleges Congress

July 12, 2015

Bhopal, Jul 12: Opposition Congress on Sunday questioned Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s statements claiming credit for initiating probe into Vyapam scam, and alleged that he tried to “cover up” the scandal for many years.shivraj singh chauhan

It claimed that though the first FIR was filed in 2009, Mr. Chouhan did not admit that there were any irregularities till the second FIR was filed in the scam in 2014.

“The first FIR relating to the scam was registered on July 19, 2009 by state Medical Education department (with MP Nagar police station in Bhopal). However, 20 months later, Chouhan on March 31, 2011 told the state Legislative Assembly that as per investigations into the FIR no student got admission to MBBS course through fraudulent means,” state Congress chief spokesman KK Mishra told reporters.

Mr. Chouhan has been claiming that he had blown the lid off the massive examination and recruitment scam in the state Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), commonly known as Vyapam by the Hindi acronym of Vyavsayik Pareesksha Mandal.

Mr. Mishra said the second FIR (no. 539/14) was registered with Rajendra Nagar police station in Indore by crime branch in January 2014.

“After this, the CM interestingly accepted in the Legislative Assembly on January 15, 2014 that around 1000 ’Munna Bhais’ (colloquial term for fraudsters) have secured admission in MBBS in government colleges by fraudulent means. However, he (Chouhan) didn’t divulge details of these Munna Bhais for reasons best known to him,” the Congress leader said.

“These incidents lay bare Chouhan’s claim that he was a whistleblower,” Mr. Mishra said, adding that Mr. Chouhan’s claim was “wrong and false” and that he actually tried to “cover up” the scam.

The high-profile scam was being probed by the Special Task Force under the monitoring of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Madhya Pradesh High Court before the Supreme Court ordered the CBI to investigate the scam which has rocked the nation with a spate of deaths of people associated with the scandal.

Under the massive scam, hundreds of students secured admissions in MBBS course in government colleges allegedly through fraudulent means while a large number of candidates got jobs in government departments with the alleged collusion of bureaucrats and politicians.

A look at the trail the Vyapam scam has left since 2007:

Noting that it will not allow even one more death, the Supreme Court transferred all criminal and death cases linked to the Vyapam scam to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a “fair and impartial” probe.

The Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe into the multi-crore cash-for-jobs scam in the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board that has resulted in unexplained deaths of key accused and witnesses.

Mumbai, Feb 18: A group of citizens on Tuesday demanded a thorough inquiry into the death of special CBI judge Brijgopal Harkishan Loya in 2014.

The group has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, seeking a time-bound probe into the death of Loya.

Loya, who was hearing the high-profile Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case of Gujarat, died of a cardiac arrest in Nagpur on December 1, 2014, when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague's daughter.

Social activist Ashok Pai, addressing a press conference on behalf of the group, also demanded proper compensation for the judge's family, saying he was on an "official" tour.

Pai said on Tuesday he met NCP president Sharad Pawar, whose party is a key constituent of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra, and raised these demands with him.

Pawar assured to look into the demands, he said at the press conference at the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh.

"We have handed over a letter to Maharashtra Assembly speaker Nana Patole and dispatched a copy of the letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray (seeking a probe into Loya's death)," Pai said.

As the matter relates to "mysterious" death of a sitting judge of the CBI, all facts about it must be made public after a detailed and time-bound probe, Pai said.

The Loya death case had reached the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court had held that Loya had died of "natural causes" and had rejected PILs seeking an SIT probe into the death, questioning their motive.

The SC had held that petitions were moved by political rivals to settle scores which was a serious attempt to scandalise the judiciary and obstruct the course of justice through a "frontal attack" on its independence.

New Delhi, Jan 7: The Delhi Police has filed an FIR against JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh and 19 others for allegedly attacking security guards and vandalising the server room of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on January 4.

The police registered the FIR on January 5.

In the complaint filed by the JNU administration, the University alleged that the accused were involved in physical violence and pushed the women guards, verbally abused them and threatened them of dire consequences if they opened the lock of university's communication and information (CIS) office.

"They illegally trespassed the University property with the criminal intention to damage the public property. They damaged servers and made it dysfunctional. They also damaged fiber optic power supplies and broke the biometric systems inside the room," the University officials alleged.

This incident allegedly occurred a day before Aishe Ghosh, other JNU students and teachers were attacked by a masked mob inside the campus.
