Lucknow, Dec 3: The BJP won 14 of the 16 mayoral seats in the recently held Uttar Pradesh civic elections. A close analysis of the results show that the saffron party's sweep was confined to the big cities and it, in fact, fared poorly in the smaller districts and towns, where independents reigned supreme.

The BJP failed to open its account in as many as 36 districts, while many of its nominees also lost their deposits at several places.

The data provided by the state Election Commission revealed that of the 1,299 seats of corporators, BJP candidates emerged victorious in 596. The Samajwadi Party (SP) won 202 seats, while the BSP and Congress bagged 147 and 110 seats, respectively.

The saffron party, however, fared badly in the elections to the nagar palika parishad and nagar panchayats. Of the 198 seats of nagar palika paishad presidents, the BJP could win only 70. The SP finished second with 45 seats.

The BJP could win only 17.53 % seats of the nagar palika parishad members, the data revealed. The party emerged victorious in only 922 of the 5,260 seats.

Similarly, the saffron party managed to win only 100 of the 438 nagar panchayat president seats. The SP won 83 seats, while the BSP emerged victorious on 45 seats.

Only 664 BJP nominees could make it to the nagar panchayats as members. The total seats of Nagar Panchayat were 5,433.

BJP leaders here said that the party would analyse the civic polls results at length over the next few days. "We could have done better," said a senior BJP leader here on Sunday.

SP leader Rajendra Chaudhary said that the BJP's claim of sweeping the urban local bodies polls was "far from true".

"The SP may have lost the mayoral polls but we have done far better in the smaller districts and towns," Chaudhary said.

Attari, Mar 19: At least 29 Indians, who had gone to Dubai to watch a cricket match which was called off later, on Wednesday night returned to India through the land transit route of Attari-Wagah border here.

Earlier, when they entered India after being cleared by the Pakistan Immigration Authority, they were detained at Attari border, as they were not having requisite permission on their passport to return to India through Pakistan.

According to officials, they had earlier flown to Dubai from New Delhi to watch a Pakistan League Cricket match there.

The match, however, was aborted and they decided to return India via Pakistan. They took a flight to Pakistan and after landing there, they took land route to reach Attari-Wagah border.

All were cleared by Indian immigration authority after being allowed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Amritsar Civil Surgeon Dr Prabdeep Kaur Johal said that by 9.30 PM all the Indian nationals were not handed over to the medical team for checkup.

She said if anyone of them are found with any symptoms of the virus, they would be admitted to Amritsar Government Hospital or else they would be allowed to continue their journey to Delhi or elsewhere.

Mumbai, Jul 2: The Shiv Sena on Thursday termed the ban on 59 Chinese apps by the Indian government as a "digital strike" and asked if these apps were a threat to the national security, how did they operate for so many years.

An editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' sought to know when did the Centre realise these apps were a threat to the national security.

By banning the Chinese apps, Prime Minister Narendra Modi protected the interests of Indian internet users and his courage has be lauded, the Marathi publication said.

India on Monday banned 59 apps with Chinese links, including TikTok, UC Browser, SHAREit and WeChat, saying they were prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity and security of the country.

"If these apps were a threat to national security, how is it that these apps were functioning without any hurdles for so many years. If the opposition says the government neglected national security, then what will the Centre's stand be?" the Shiv Sena asked.

It said questions should be raised on all the previous governments for "allowing national data to go out of the country".

China has expressed displeasure over the Indian government's decision, the Marathi daily said, adding that Chinese soldiers are "still not ready to leave the Galwan Valley (in Ladakh)".

The Sena said it took the sacrifices of 20 soldiers for the government to realise Indian data was being illegally taken out of the country.

"The government took revenge by a digital strike," it stated.

There have been complaints earlier that users' data on Chinese apps was illegally sent out of the country, and apps like TikTok were "promoting vulgarity", it said.

"Many TikTok stars had reportedly joined the BJP," the Sena claimed. "What will happen to them?" it asked.

There is a need to break China economically, but that will not happen by banning its apps. The issue is about trade and investment between the two countries, it said.

"The largest Chinese investment is in Gujarat.

Chinese company Huawei has got the contract to set up 5G network in India. This company having keys to India's digital economy is akin to the Chinese Communist Party owning the Indian economy in future," it said.
