Ahmednagar, Sept 11: A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide over the Maratha reservation issue in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, police said Tuesday.

Kishori Baban Kanade, Class 11 student of the Radhabai Kale Mahila Mahavidyalaya, hanged herself Monday afternoon from a ceiling fan in her hostel room, Topkhana police station Inspector Vishal Sanas told PTI.

The girl, hailing from a poor farming family at Kapurwadi in Ahmednagar tehsil, left a suicide note in which she purportedly mentioned that she was "sacrificing" her life over the demand for reservation to the Maratha community, he said.

The girl mentioned in the note that she had secured 89 per cent marks in her Class 10 exams held earlier this year, but could not get admission under a category where her family could have paid less fees, Sanas said.

Her father, who is a farmer, paid Rs 8,000 fees for her admission in non-grant basis division, which was burdening her poor family, the police said.

At the same time, students from reserved categories got the admission in grantable division (which has provision for fee concession) for Rs 1,000 when they had an average of 76 per cent marks, Sanas said, quoting the suicide note.

The girl mentioned that she faced "injustice" only because she has was born in the Maratha community.

She expressed hope that her sacrifice would boost the movement for reservation to the Maratha community, the police official said.

Expressing shock over Kanade's death, the college principal, Dinkar Patil, said the girl was academically bright.

Some Maratha organisations held the state government responsible for the girl's suicide.

Marathas, a politically influential community that constitutes around 30 per cent of the state's population, have been demanding 16 per cent reservation in government jobs and education.

The community had in July launched an agitation which witnessed violence at several places in the state.

Around eight people had committed suicide in the last two months where the deceased linked their decision to end life to the Maratha quota demand.

New Delhi, Jun 18: Republican Party of India (RPI-A) leader Ramdas Athawale on Thursday urged Indians to boycott Chinese food and asked for a ban on all restaurants which serve the cuisine.

"Restaurants selling Chinese food should be banned. Restaurants should be closed by the order of the state government. I appeal to people who consume Chinese food to boycott it," Athawale told ANI here.

The Union Minister also said that both the products which come from China and its literature should also be banned in the country.

"The Chinese literature should also be banned, its products too should be banned and its companies too should not be given business here. We should develop such companies in the country which can manufacture the same products here," he added.

Athawale also warned China to reconsider its actions and stop its nefarious activities on the border by saying, "You took Buddha from us but we don't want yuddha (war) with you. A war will prove to be costly for both countries, economically and loss of lives will also occur. If we (Indians) are not crossing the border then why are you doing so?"

Athawale's statements came after at least 20 Indian Army personnel, including a Colonel rank officer, lost their lives in the violent face-off in the Galwan valley area of Ladakh on June 15.

The clash happened as a result of an attempt by the Chinese troops to "unilaterally change" the status quo during de-escalation in eastern Ladakh and the situation could have been avoided if the agreement at the higher level been scrupulously followed by the Chinese side, India said on June 16.

New Delhi, Feb 17: Four death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder will be hanged on March 3 at 6 am a Delhi court said on Monday.

The Patiala House Court on Monday issued fresh death warrants against four convicts while hearing a petition by the state and Nirbhaya's parents.

Earlier, Delhi High Court on February 5 granted a week's time to the four convicts to avail of all legal remedies available to them and said that the convicts cannot be hanged separately since they were convicted for the same crime.

A Delhi Court had earlier issued a death warrant against the four convicts -- Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, and Mukesh Singh -- on January 7 and they were scheduled to be executed on January 22 at Tihar Jail. Later, the execution was suspended indefinitely by a Delhi court.
