Chikkamagaluru, Oct 21: The maturity and presence of mind displayed by the clerics and management committee members of a mosque at a remote village in Karnataka has averted a potential communal riot after a small group of trouble mongers carrying the idol of a local deity barged into its premises in an apparent bid to disturb peace.

The incident took place during a Dasara procession at Kammaradi village in Koppa taluk of Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district in the wee hours of Saturday.

A few bhakts (devotees), who were carrying the idol of a local deity on their shoulders deviated from the route and entered the premises of a mosque after damaging its entrance gate. They also tried to break open the main door of the mosque by hitting the palanquin of the idol against it repeatedly.

The bhakts who were reportedly in an inebriated state, then asked the three clerics of the mosque – who were sleeping inside on the occasion – to open the door immediately. However, after a few minutes, the intruders vacated the mosque premises and continued procession towards the immersion spot.

When the trouble mongers were questioned for their act, they tried to impose a popular myth that those who carry the idol of the deity do not have control over themselves and it’s the deity itself that leads them wherever it wants to go.

The incident had created a tense atmosphere in the region. However, the clerics of the mosque took immediate precautionary measures to prevent any retaliation. They urged the Muslims to maintain peace and warned against taking law into hands.

“This is an apparent attempt to disrupt peace by a handful of miscreants. They just wanted to provoke local Muslims. Otherwise they would not have videographed the entire episode and uploaded it on social media. But, we should not be provoked. We should realise that Hindu society has no role behind this act. This is the handiwork of a bunch of miscreants,” said the imam of the mosque.

Meanwhile, the management committee of the mosque wrote to the authorities of the temple, from where the idol was brought in a procession, urging them to take necessary steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.

Udupi, Jun 5: Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha member Shobha Karandlje accused members of Tablighi Jamaat of spreading Coronavirus, particularly in slums, in Bengaluru.

Speaking to newsmen here Friday night, she said that the members had intentionally spread the virus in Siddique Layout and Padarayanapura. Members had hatched a conspiracy to destroy the country. She would raise the issue with the central government.

She said that New Delhi and Maharashtra were responsible for rising Covid-19 cases in the country. Highlighting the programmes, introduced by Modi-led NDA government for the past six years, she blamed Covid-19 for the collapse of the economy. But for Covid-19 Modi government at the Centre would have been a leader in the world,” she added.

She said 13,541 people, stranded in other States and foreign countries, had returned to Udupi. “We have sufficient beds in the district to tackle the situation. But if more people decide to travel to Udupi, arranging quarantine facilities would be a huge challenge,” she added.

Bengaluru, Feb 4: Karnataka High Court on Monday reserved order on plea, seeking cancellation of bail granted to Nithyananda for skipping the trial and fleeing the country.

After hearing the arguments, the court has reserved the matter for further orders which will be pronounced on February 5.

The plea, which was filed in the high court on January 23, was heard by Justice John Michael Cunha.

The counsel for the complainant Lenin put forth arguments that the self-styled godman Swami Nithyananda had fled the country to escape the trial. "Nityananda has been claiming to be in India in his exemption petitions filed before the trial court but during that time he sought asylum in Ecuador and is having a second passport," said Lenin.

The prosecutor informed the court that they do not need his presence for the trial at this time.

Nithyananda, accused of rape and child abuse, has been absconding since November 2018.

In December 2019, the Ministry of External Affairs said that the passport of Nithyananda was cancelled and a fresh application of the same was denied as he did not get the requisite clearance from police and several criminal cases have been lodged against him.

Police in Ahmedabad had arrested two woman administrators of the ashram, allegedly owned by Nithyananda, and freed two boys who were held captive there.

Two of his disciples, Pranpriya and Priyatattva, were arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by one Janardhan Sharma who alleged that his daughter was held captive in Nithyananda's ashram.

The police took the two women to Nithyananda's ashram in Hathiajan for an investigation and seized laptops, mobile phones among other things.
