Cloth-like plastic bags also banned in Karnataka, says official

Bengaluru, May 27: The Forest Department will soon launch an awareness drive to educate people that bags that resemble cloth being used by shopkeepers instead of plastic carry bags have been banned by the government.

bgagReplying to queries from reporters Forest,?Environment and Ecology Department Additional?Chief Secretary T?M?Vijayabhaskar said the bags, which resemble cloth contain “non-woven polypropylene, have been banned by the state government along with plastic carry bags. He said many shopkeepers and hoteliers have started using these bags assuming that they are biodegradable and environment-friendly. They are also charging Rs 2 to Rs 10 for these bags depending on its size, he added.

Vijayabhaskar said many people do not know that polypropylene is a sort of plastic and a synthetic resin.

This will also be brought to the notice of officials responsible for implementation of the ban, he added. A source said Forest Minister B Ramanath Rai also held a meeting to review the implementation of the plastic ban. It was decided that the state government will speak to the Jute Corporation of India to provide material than can serve as alternative to plastic bags, he said.

The meeting felt that vigil at check points should be stepped up to prevent the entry of plastic carry bags into the state, the source said. The government, through a notification on March 11, imposed a complete ban on plastic irrespective of its thickness. These include plastic carry bags, plastic banners, plastic buntings, flex, plastic flags, plates, cups, spoons, cling films and plastic sheets for spreading on dinning table irrespective of thickness.

We should have an alternate for Plastic bags. If non Woven fabric carry bags are BIODEGRADABLE then there is no harm in using it. It would be difficult to carry cloth / Jute bags for small purchase.

Mangaluru/Mysuru, Mar 2:Unseasonal rain that lashed several parts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Mysuru districts on Monday brought big relief from scorching heat experienced since last one week.

According to official sources here, the Port city received rain for more than two hours since 0500 hrs. Mangaluru, Thokkottu, Ullal, Kavoor, Bondel, Bejai and other areas surrounding Mangaluru experienced rainfall.

Power supply was disrupted following rainfall. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted 'generally cloudy sky' for Mangaluru on Monday.

Bengaluru, Jun 4: Assuring support to reform the police department, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Thursday directed officials to strengthen Cyber Crime, Economic Offences & Narcotics (CEN) stations and forensic labs in the state.

The Chief Minister who held a review of the Home Department, lauded the work of police personnel during the COVID-19 crisis, and promised necessary help to reform the department.

Pointing at the changing scenario, the Chief Minister instructed officials to give priority to strengthen CEN stations, his office said in a release. Similarly, for quick detection of crimes, necessary action will be taken to strengthen forensic labs, he added. During the meeting it was also decided to continue more than 3,000 home guards, who were in the fear of losing jobs, and to deploy them to various departments.

Yediyurappa directed officials to take necessary steps to make home guard services available to private organisations also. Officials informed the Chief Minister that all necessary COVID-19 related precautions have been taken at prisons and no case has been reported so far at jails. They said as per Supreme Court directions, 5,005 people were released on bail and parole, and congestion of prisoners at prisons has been reduced from 110 per cent to 95 per cent.

Yediyurappa also asked the officials to submit a proposal based on facts towards development of basic amenities that comes under the Home Department.

Kalaburgi, Jan 2: At least 10 students sustained injuries when a private bus carrying students of a school on an educational tour rammed into a tree today morning.

The mishap occurred when the students of Ayyappa School located in Chennaveera Nagar were going around the city in a bus during their tour.

The bus crashed into a tree near Venkatagiri Hotel on New Jewargi Road in the city.

A case has been registered at a traffic police station.
