CM Kumaraswamy still confident of coalition govt surviving the crisis

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today said that the situation has not arisen where he had to quit his post as Coalition government will survive the rebel scare it is facing since last one week.

Speaking to reporters after holding a meeting with top leaders of Coalition partner Congress at Kumara Krupa Guest House here on Thursday, he claimed that there was no immediate threat to his government and expressed confidence that all those 16 MLAs who had tendered their resignation to their seats would withdraw and extend support to the government.

He said in 2009 when BJP State President B S Yeddyurappa was the Chief Minister he did not quit when 18 legislators had rebelled against him.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court today asked the 10 rebel’ MLAs, that included seven from Congress and three from JD(S), to go before Assembly Speaker before 6 PM today. The 10 legislators had approached the Apex Court saying that the Speaker was delaying the acceptance of their resignation letters and there was a conspiracy to disqualify them under Anti Defection law by the Speaker.

The apex court, before adjourning further hearing of the case to tomorrow, had also asked Karnataka DGP to provide security to the ‘rebel’ MLAs when they meet the Speaker.

JD(S) rebel leader A H Vishwanath speaking at Renaissance hotel in Mumbai said he welcomes the Supreme Court direction and all the 10 MLAs would meet the Speaker in Bengaluru today as per its direction. They would be flying in a special flight from Mumbai today, information reaching here quoted him as saying.

He said if the Speaker insists that some of the resignation letters by rebel MLAs was not in order they would submit fresh resignation letters. ‘’We are united and there is no question of the 10 legislators who are now in Mumbai going back on their decision to quit their seats,’’ he said.

The Kumaraswamy government is facing a severe threat of falling into minority as 16 MLAs have tendered resignation to their seats. Before the latest developments the government had the support of 119 members including two independents and the Speaker.

If their resignation is accepted the number will fall to 103. It will further fall to 101 as the two independents, who were recently made ministers, have already withdrawn their support to the government.

This would effectively bring down the house to 206 if the resignation letters of the ‘rebel’ legislators are accepted. Then the simple majority mark will fall to 104. Then the coalition government would have support of only 101 legislators. The opposition BJP at present has a strength of 105 MLAs on its own and the two independents have also extended their support to the BJP.

Bengaluru, May 21: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa today slammed Law Minister JC Madhuswamy for yelling at a woman farmer in Kolar, an incident that attracted widespread criticism.

The incident happened on Wednesday when Madhuswamy, who is also the minor irrigation minister, was inspecting the Koramangala-Challaghatta (KC) Valley project, under which Bengaluru’s sewage is treated and pumped into lakes in Kolar.

During his visit, farmer Nalini Gowda questioned Madhuswamy on the encroachment of the 1,022-acre S Agrahara lake. At one point, Madhuswamy lost his cool and yelled, “Aye! Shut your mouth, rascal,” and asked the police to take her away. Before this, Madhuswamy told her, “Make a request. I’m a very bad man. You can only air your grievance. Don’t command us.”

A video of this exchange was aired by news channels.

“What (Madhuswamy) said is not right. I have warned him. None can forgive such an explicit manner of talking with a woman. That, too, behaving like that being a minister doesn’t bode well. I will talk to that woman also and I’ll ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Yediyurappa told reporters.

The incident has come as a shot in the arm to the Opposition Congress, which is already attacking the Yediyurappa administration on the COVID-19 crisis. Condemning Madhuswamy’s behaviour, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah demanded an apology and asked Yediyurappa to sack him from the Cabinet.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar said it was unbecoming of Madhuswamy to behave like that being a senior minister. “People will ask us questions and express their problems, naturally. What’s important is how we handle ourselves. Be it a woman or anyone, they come to us because we’re into public service. Calling them ‘rascal’ and things is not right. Maybe there was some irritation, but I agree with (Siddaramaiah) that he should be dropped from the Cabinet,” he said.

On his part, Madhuswamy said he felt intimidated. “If I have hurt the feelings of any woman, I will certainly apologise,” he said. “But citizens should realise, we go to their villages to ask about their problems. If they start abusing us publicly, how can we work? My secretary and I heard her for five minutes and then told her that we know our responsibility. We asked her to close the issue. She didn’t stop and I got tempted (sic),” the minister said.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A woman suffered critical injuries after a speeding car knocked down her scooter and then ran over her at Kadri Kambla Junction in the city today.

The woman identified as Vanishri Bhat (22) a resident of Kedila from Puttur.

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman.

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way.

She has suffered critical injuries on her head, ribs, hands and legs, sources said. She is reportedly responding to treatment.

It may be recalled that in December last year a lorry-auto accident at the same spot claimed life of a 56-year-old teacher while the auto driver miraculously survived. Following the accident, speed breakers were installed at the junction.
