CM promises of overall development of coastal region, promotion of Mangaluru as economic hub

Mangaluru, Sept 7: Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday said that his government would focus more on developing Mangaluru as the hub of economic activities since it is next to Bengaluru when it comes to revenue generation in the state.

Speaking to reporters after holding a review meeting of development works and rain-related damages in the district, Mr Kumaraswamy said he would convene another meeting of people’s representatives from the region soon to chalk out the road map for development.

He said: “Our coalition government is committed to the overall development of the (coastal) region in terms of infrastructure, industries, tourism and other allied sectors. A comprehensive policy would be framed for the purpose.”

He said public infrastructure, including roads and bridges, worth Rs. 213 crore have been damaged during the rains.

The Deputy Commissioner has funds to the tune of Rs. 25 crore at his disposal, which would be spent for immediate restoration of damaged infrastructure owing to natural calamity. The government would further release funds to restore all the damaged infrastructure.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said he is aware of the region remaining disconnected from Bengaluru following torrential rains in August and government agencies would work to restore connectivity, he said. Asked about the progress of the proposed Green Bypass on Shiradi Ghat, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the detailed project report is before the government.

The Chief Minister said he is aware of the plight of endosulfan victims in the district and has sought a comprehensive report on the status and condition of the victims. The government will bring out a comprehensive rehabilitation policy for the victims, he said. Responding to a question on government’s stand on implementation of Kasturirangan Report on Western Ghats, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the government is awaiting reports from expert panels constituted following the Kodagu deluge. After the reports, the government would take a suitable decision on Western Ghat’s protection, he said.

Mangaluru, June 29: Six more personnel from Ullal Police Station in Mangaluru taluk have tested positive for covid-19. 

With this, the total number of covid positive cops from the Ullal Police Station mounted to 10.

Official sources said that throat swabs of five police personnel and a Home Guard from Ullal today received positive report today. Earlier, four other cops were tested positive. 

In addition to the police personnel, two undertrials arrested by the Ullal police on the charges of murder attempt at Thokkottu Olapete too were tested positive for Covid-19 June 28.

Bengaluru, Feb 5: New Tulu movie Pingara has bagged the NETPAC International Jury Award at the 12th edition of Bengaluru International Film Festial (BIFFes) on Wednesday.

Written and directed by Preetham R Shetty, the movie revolves around people who worship daivas (spirits) of Tulu Nadu.

The narrative goes back and forth in time, to tell the story of a family to Sinchana (Chaitanya Chandramohan), a journalist from Bengaluru who visits a village in Tulu Nadu to ‘write on Tulu culture.’

The film speaks about the caste system in Tulu Nadu and the struggle for land in the post-independence period.

Mysuru, Jan 11: City Police has intensified its search for a girl student who a displayed 'Free Kashmir' poster during a protest two days back.

According to police, a girl student displayed the poster carrying an anti-national message, during the protest organised by University of Mysore Researchers Association and other organisation on Wednesday to oppose the attack on the students and the teachers in Jawaharlal Nehru University in the National Capital. An officer said that as per the documents available, it appears that a girl student displayed the placard for a few minutes.

"We are looking for the accused". The Jayalakshmipuram police have taken up suo motu cognisance of the case. Meanwhile. the office of Governor Vajubhai Vala, on Thursday, sought a detailed report from the University of Mysore (UoM) over the incident. The city police have booked the protestors under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
