CM on seats: JD(S) not a beggar to accept Congress crumbs

Bengaluru, Feb 20: Sharing of Lok Sabha seats is unlikely to be a smooth exercise for coalition partners Congress and JD(S) with chief minister HD Kumaraswamy and Congress legislature party leader Siddaramaiah taking on one another over the issue on Tuesday.

Refusing to take lightly the indications being given by state Congress leaders that they won’t give any LS seat currently held by the party to the JD(S) as part of seat-sharing pact, the CM said his party was not a beggar to accept whatever the Congress gives.

“I don’t know whether it is seven, five or three seats. But we (JDS) are not beggars (to accept whatever they give us). I will not mince words,” a visibly angry Kumaraswamy told reporters in Mysuru.

Siddaramaiah hit back by saying that neither the Congress nor JD(S) is a beggar. “It is a coalition government. Nobody is a beggar. A final decision on seat sharing is yet to be taken,” the former CM said on the sidelines of the youth Congress programme in Bengaluru.

The Congress election committee which met here on Monday has decided not to give any of the 10 LS seats held by the party to JD(S). Siddaramaiah confirmed this by saying the party feels it should not compromise on the 10 seats.

This has not gone down well with JD(S) as it has prepared to make a strong bid for Tumakuru and Chikkaballapura seats, which are held by the Congress, when both the parties sit across the table to finalise the pact.

Kumaraswamy also sought to remind the Congress how important it is for both the parties to settle the issue amicably. “It (LS election) is crucial and we need to send a message to the public as well as political opponents. So leaders of both the parties should sit together and sort out the matter,” he added.

He said it’ll be his father and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda who will hold discussions with the Congress on seat sharing, not him. “My responsibility is limited to running the coalition government successfully by ensuring good administration,” he added. He dismissed reports that Congress leaders had discussed seat sharing with him.

Hubli, Feb 17: A local court here on Monday sent three Kashmiri students who were arrested on charges of sedition to judicial custody till March 2.

They were arrested for allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans and posting a video of the same on social media, told police.

All three were taken into custody by the police on Sunday night and were produced before a local court on Monday.

Bengaluru, Jul 10: With 2,313 more people testing positive for coronavirus in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, its overall tally of patients rose to 33,418 on Friday, health officials said.

57 patients died in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, with majority (27) of them from Bengaluru, taking the state''s death toll to 543, the officials added.

Bengaluru accounted for 1,447 or 63 per cent of the new COVID-19 cases, spiking its tally to 15,329, out of which 11,687 are active cases.

The city alone accounts for 46 per cent of all the cases in the state.

As many as 45 deaths had Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) as a common symptom.

Among the new cases, excluding Bengaluru, Dakshina Kannada accounted for 139 infections, followed by Vijayapura (89), Ballari (66), Kalaburagi (58), Yadgir and Mysuru (51 each) among others.

On Friday, a record 1,003 patients got discharged, 601 of them in Bengaluru alone with the total number of discharges rising up to 13,836.

Until now, Karnataka has tested 7.79 lakh samples for Covid, out of which 7.28 lakh tested negative.

Despite the record number of discharges, patients in ICU rose to 472.

Of the 33,418 cases, 19,035 are active in the state.

Mangaluru, Apr 3: The laboratory at District Wenlock Hospital has initiated trial for Covid 19 testing, close on the heels of receiving permission from state government.

Doctors, elected representatives and stakeholders had repeatedly demanded that a laboratory should be set up in the port city. Without the lab, the samples were sent either to Shivamogga or to Bengaluru for testing. When Heath Minister Sriramulu had visited Mangaluru on March 17, he had promised a lab in the city for testing of the samples.

Accordingly, the government gave permission for starting the laboratory at Wenlock Hospital. The process of registering the lab with Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) will be completed shortly. The laboratory will be fully operational only after it is registered.
