Collection of Indirect tax up 27% in Apr-Aug

New Delhi, Sep 13: The government’s revenue collection in the first five months of current fiscal has shown impressive growth, with indirect taxes up 27.5% and direct taxes, 15.03%.

taxThe total direct and indirect tax collections at the end of August stood at Rs 5.25 lakh crore, about a third of the Rs 16.26 lakh crore target for 2016-17.

The government is eyeing 12.64% growth from direct tax to Rs 8.47 lakh crore in the current fiscal, and 10.8% growth to Rs 7.79 lakh crore from indirect tax.

Led by robust collections in personal income tax and excise duty, direct tax mop up touched Rs 1.89 lakh crore and indirect tax revenue stood at Rs 3.36 lakh crore during the April-August period.

Direct tax revenue includes corporate and personal income tax. Indirect tax takes into account mop up from excise, service tax and customs duty.

The gross collection of Corporate Income Tax (CIT) grew at 11.55%, while that under personal income tax (PIT) it was 24.06% over the corresponding period last fiscal.

After adjusting for refunds, however, the net growth in CIT collections is (-)1.89% while that in PIT collections is 31.76%.

Excise duty collections grew 48.8% in the April- August period to Rs 1.53 lakh crore, while Service Tax recorded an increase of 23.2% at Rs 92,696 crore.

Customs mop-up during the five-month period was at Rs 90,448 crore, registering a growth of 5.7%.

Mumbai, Mar 3: The country will turn "peaceful" if Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "bhakts" follow him in quitting the social media, the NCP said on Tuesday, taking a dig at the PM over his tweet that was thinking of giving up his social media accounts.

NCP chief spokesperson and Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik also said that Modi's decision will be "in the interest of the country".

His comments came a day after Modi said he is contemplating giving up social media presence.

"This Sunday, thinking of giving up my social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube. Will keep you all posted," the prime minister said on the micro-blogging site.

Taking a swipe at the prime minister, Malik in a tweet said, "Yesterday, Modi ji gave hint of giving up the social media from Sunday. Some leaders are also talking about giving up (the social media). The country will turn peaceful if all the bhakts (followers) give it up."

"Modi ji's decision will be in the interest of the country. We welcome it, Modi ji take decision," Malik tweeted with the hash tag "ModiQuitsSocialMedia".

Earlier, the Congress took a swipe at the prime minister, with Rahul Gandhi tweeting "Give up hatred, not social media accounts" after tagging Modi's post.

Within minutes of Modi's tweet on Monday, scores of netizens urged him not to quit the various social media platforms as 'No Sir' trended on Twitter.

The prime minister is one of the most-followed world leaders on social media. He has 53.3 million followers on Twitter, 44 million on Facebook and 35.2 millionon Instagram.

The Twitter handle of Prime Minister's Office has 32 million followers.

In September 2019, PM Modi was the third most followed world leader on the microblogging site, behind only US President Donald Trump and his predecessor Barack Obama.

The Prime Minister was the first Indian to cross the 50-million followers mark on Twitter.

Bengaluru, Mar 12: Imarti Devi, who recently resigned as Congress MLA from Madhya Pradesh, on Wednesday said that she was happy with Jyotiraditya Scindia's decision to join the BJP.

Imarti said: "All 22 MLAs are here (in Bengaluru) on their own. We're happy that Scindiaji has taken this decision. I'll always stay with him even if I had to jump in a well."

"When we were in the Congress, Kamal Nathji never heard us," she said.

Another rebel leader and former minister Mahendra Singh Sisodia said: "Betrayal is not done by Jyotiraditya Scindia. Instead, betrayal was done by the Congress and Kamal Nathji."

"Congress betrayed the people of Madhya Pradesh. We are with Jyotiraditya Scindia," he said.

Patna, Jun 25: At least 83 people died due to thunderstorms in Bihar in the last 24 hours, according to Chief Minister's Office.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced Rs 4 lakhs each for the families of deceased.

Thirteen people died in Gopalganj, 8 each in Madhubani and Nawada, 6 each in Baghalpur and Siwan, 5 each in Darbhanga, Banka, East Champaran and 3 each in Khagaria and Aurangabad.

Due to thunderstorms, two people each lost their lives in West Champaran, Kishanganj, Jamui, Jahanabad, Purnia, Supaul, Buxar, Kaimur while one death each was reported in Samastipur, Shivhar, Saran, Sitamarhi and Madhepura.
