College girls go topless on Facebook after professor asks them to cover their “watermelons”

In a bizarre protest, two female students of a teachers training college in Kerala’s Kozhikode posted their topless pictures on Facebook recently after their professor criticised the new generation women for not dressing properly and asked them not displaying their chests like "slices of watermelon".

Though Facebook has taken down the pictures and blocked the two girls from the social networking site, the campaign has already caused quite a stir, triggering both positive and negative responses.

The campaign against the professor of Farook Training College was launched by a man called Vishnu, who shared his partner Arathy SA’s topless picture on Facebook in protest. Following the footsteps, Thiruvananthapuram-based Diya Sana posted pictures of a topless woman holding watermelons on the social networking site. The Facebook subsequently blocked both the accounts.

Prof. Jouhar Munavvir, who teaches social science at the college, had invited wrath after a voice clip allegedly from his speech during a family counselling went viral on social media.

“I am a teacher of a college where 80 per cent of the students are girls and of that, a majority are Muslims. These girls are not wearing the dress as per the religious tradition. They are not covering their chests with hijab. But showing part of it is like a slice of red watermelon being displayed,” he has been heard saying in the Malayalam language clip.

The professor lashed out at girls wearing leggings, saying the girl students hold purdah deliberately up to show off the leggings.  He went on to warn them that this kind of immoral dress style will lead them to lose both physical and spiritual worlds.

Meanwhile, the Students Federation of India (SFI) on Monday took out a march to the Farook Training College demanding strict action against the professor for his controversial remarks.

College principal C A Jawahar said action would be taken against the teacher only if the students file a formal complaint. “The statement likening a woman’s body to a water melon was made during a speech he delivered to a group of families a few weeks ago. The video circulating on social media has only a selected clipping from the event and not the entire one,” he said.

Though the students had taken out a march outside the college, none of them made any formal complaint. “We will decide about taking action only after reviewing the incident,” the principal said.

Well said Jouhar Sir. You really dare to speak the truth. SFI don't know anything but protest. Non-sense. Truth, always becomes "contraversial" only to bad minded people. Kudos Jouhar Munavvir Sir.

Abu Dhabi-based NMC Healthcare has reportedly received bids to sell its distribution unit and will soon be selling it to different parties.

The development comes over three months after NMC Healthcare’s founder and then-chairman B R Shetty stepped down amid allegations of massive fraud.

The company, which recently laid off hundreds of workers, is offloading stake in the subsidiary as it is considered non-core and requires substantially high working capital to run the operations. In addition, this stake sale will help the company pay off some of its debt

"There are parties who have strong interest in the distribution business. NMC will be offloading the unit soon and that also to different parties," a source said.

"The company is in the process of exploring options for NMC Trading, the group's distribution business, which it has determined to be non-core and requiring substantial levels of working capital. The process should not materially adversely impact distributors' activities, nor NMC Trading's customers," an NMC Healthcare spokeswoman said.

The UK-court has appointed Alvarez & Marsal as administrator to oversee the operations of the debt-ridden hospital operator. The healthcare firm has been caught in a whirlpool of $6.6 billion debt while its senior former high management team is under investigation for financial irregularities.

The UAE Central Bank has direct local banks to freeze all bank accounts of NMC founder BR Shetty and his family members as well as accounts of those companies where he has a stake. The Central Bank move is subsequent to a criminal complaint filed by Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, which has the largest exposure to NMC Healthcare, amounting Dh3 billion.

As the company faces financial difficulties, Reuters reported that NMC Health delayed May staff salaries and now expects to complete making payments by the first week of June.

The spokeswoman said: "The company has been in regular dialogue with its creditor constituencies through various creditor committees, including the direct bank lenders to its NMC Trading businesses."

Bengaluru, Jul 31: BJP leader CP Yogeshwar has slammed Yediyurappa supporters and said the JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy is supporting BJP.

Speaking to the reporters, Yogeshwar said, "Congress president DK Shivakumar and Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former CM HD Kumaraswamy, both are Yediyurappa supporters."

"His words seem to support the BJP. All that Kumaraswamy had said, during our government's rule, are happening including the officers they mentioned are being transferred. He has come forward to support BJP from the back door," Yogeshwar.

While reacting to allegations made by CP Yogeshwar, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president DK Shivakumar has said that earlier Yogeshwar requested for State Legislative Council (MLC) member ticket and now such people are blaming me without any evidence. This shows his dishonesty to his party and the kind of person he is."
