However, if a single event that can potentially burry CWG is the outcome of the settlement of the case on September 24th by the Allahabad High Court on Ayodhya-Babri Masjid ownership dispute pending before courts for almost sixty years. The judgment is potential enough to create havoc not only in Uttar Pradesh but also throughout India, whatever precautions governments may take, will not be strong enough to withstand the mighty current of communal disaster. India has experienced it, we will have to experience this time too. If any such thing happens, Common Wealth Game will sure flow through Yamuna to Bay of Bengal. Will any country send its team to India when it is burning? Suresh Kalmadi and team may be wishing and may be praying too, for a greater disaster to happen - who will fish out CWG from sea?
The only solution for the Government of India to save CWG, and thereby the reputation of India, is to approach Allahabad High Court and request to postpone the judgment at least till the completion of the games. I am not sure whether any such provision is there under any law but the Government should find a way to approach the court. I am very cynical that the Ayodhya judgment will put the reputation of India at risk internationally but let us not give chance to two simultaneous disasters. Let us finish the games first.
Political leaders have already started playing safe. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayavathi has requested the central government to dispatch 35,000 additional para-military troops to help maintain law and order in that state thereby conveniently passing the buck on to the central government. LK Advani, who along with his colleagues witnessed Babri Masjid collapse in 1992, has requested his party leaders to use caution while issuing statements thereby trying to show the nation that he is a responsible leader. Whether leaders are responsible or not, they need to leave police and other security personnel to do their job, otherwise mayhem greater than Gujarat or Mumbai is just a few days away.
The outcome of the case is quite uncertain, it can go either way but if we look at the desperation of VHP/RSS circles, it gives a clue that Ayodhya property title may go to Muslims. We are hearing from various RSS corners that they will not accept the judgment if it goes against them. Quite interesting to note here is that in 1955 when the High Court granted permission to worship the deity, it was well received by RSS but now when they fear an unfavourable judgment, they have made their stand clear. If they don’t accept the judgment what will happen is everyone’s guess. In a democratic set up, can a country be run based on beliefs, setting aside facts?
What will happen if the judgment is in favour of Hindus? Nothing much, a few explosions here and there and shut down in a few places of West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. I think India can afford that. I personally hope that the judgment goes in favour of Hindus because I want a lesser impact, lesser violence. I am not telling that Muslims are lesser evil, my point is that they are not capable of causing violence as much as Hindu violent mob can cause and also, controlling minority is easier than controlling majority.
Setting feelings apart, for a Muslim, I am one, a mosque is just a place of worship and nothing more. They consider every mosque as “House of God” as long as prayers are performed therein. Now the Masjid is demolished, structure is gone - what for they are fighting? Then is it the question of ego? Ego and Islam doesn’t co-exist, if you claim you are a Muslim, give up ego. What I am trying to convince you Muslims is that if you win the case, donate the place to our Hindu brothers and sisters. For them it is a matter of faith, for us not. We claim that we follow the path taught by Prophet Mohammed (pbuh), are we comfortably picking up only those teachings which are convenient for us? Are we interested only in exterior looks or are we interested in the spirit of Prophet’s (pbuh) teachings too? To quote one example from the history, a Christian delegation once comes to meet Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) and when they needed a place to perform their prayer, the Prophet (pbuh) offered them Masjid. My advice and request to my fellow Muslims is that follow the spirit of Islam and give the right of property to Hindus for the sake of so many millions of Hindus and Muslims. Islam has been tagged with terrorism and violence; this is an opportunity to disprove that. If we can show magnanimity by sacrificing the title to the property, it will not be treated as a defeat; rather it will be held high by the people of India. Same time, Hindu leaders should ensure that this is the end of the story, no more Ayodhyas.
Government of India should put all its efforts to maintain law and order, though it is a state subject. All our economic progress should be built on the firm foundation of peace and fraternity, then only our growth of GDP in spite of world economic recession, makes sense. The growth model built on the burials of innocents in Gujarat is just hollow - let us not try to prototype that.
