It was Alexander’s biggest dream to conquer India and to become the ‘Emperor of Asia’. But the dream remained a dream and he returned to Macedonia with a wounded heart and body. Australia’s most successful test captain Ricky Terry Ponting’s condition is also somewhat similar to that of the B.C.356 king. Under his captaincy, the Aussies conquered the world, but India still remains as a forbidden land for them. As a captain as well as a player, Punter’s performance in India is below par. Ponting never won a test as a captain in India. He has an average of 22 against India in India, far lesser than that of his total career average! It is not sure whether he will be there as a player for next Oz tour of India, which makes Ponting to try his level best to square the series by winning the second test.
The first test in Mohali was considered as one of the classic test matches ever played. It was a close encounter with the match swinging at both ends until the very end. However, Laxman and Ojha managed to hold on with their nerves and ride India past the victory margin. The match also saw some dubious decisions given by the umpires. Ishanth Sharma was adjudged LBW by former English Wicket Keeper Ian Gould while replays showed the ball missing the stumps by miles. Indians smelled a repetition of a Sydney disaster but were consoled soon by another blunder, this time by the kiwi Billy Bowden who turned down a strong appeal from Johnson for leg before against Pragyan Ojha. There were a couple of other decisions also, which raised eye brows on the standard of umpiring.
If India had lost that match, surely there would have been much more debate on this issue and an expected cry for the implementation of Umpires Decision Review System (UDRS). When the world’s governing body of the sport, International Cricket Council (I.C.C) decided to implement the review system for the first time in Pakistan –New Zealand test match on November 24, 2009, at Dunedin, there was mixed response from the players and match officials. While some current players and umpires like Vettori, Sangakkara , Afridi, Aleem Dar etc batted for UDRS, Dickie Bird , Joel Garner, Sachin Tendulkar etc opposed its implementation. So far, the apex cricket body has limited the UDRS only to Tests and that too at the mutual discretion of the teams. Even though India suffered a lot by contentious decisions recently, the Board of Control for Cricket In India(B.C.C.I) is still reluctant to go for the review system. N.Srinivasan, Secretary and the President elect of the board made it clear that the board is not thinking of implying the system in the upcoming New Zealand series which follows the series against Australia. Probably the extra cost that the teams have to suffer for implying the system made the richest governing body to turn down the proposal!
Even though ICC has said that the level of correct decision-making when using the system has risen from 92% to around 97%, there still are doubts regarding the system. It triggered a major storm in December last year when it authored a bizarre incident in Australia, where Mark Benson(England) withdrew after officiating for just one day into the second Australia-West Indies Test, allegedly because one of his decisions was reversed. England's most recent experience with the DRS sparked controversy during the final Test against South Africa, at Johannesburg, in January when Daryl Harper(Australia) didn't overturn a not-out decision against Graeme Smith despite an edge being audible on replay.
The system will surely help the game to maintain the fairness and to make it issue free. This will also reduce the pressure on umpires. The current system has got some irregularities in it and it is the duty of game’s governing body to rectify it. As the former elite panel umpire Rudi Koertzen (South Africa) said, the UDRS should be there in every single series. It is not fair to use it in Australia-New Zealand series and not use it in Australia-India series. From an umpire’s perspective also, it is shabby when he is getting assistance of technology in one match and have to make his own decision in another match, where there is no review support. Even though orthodox lords of the game accusing it for questioning the umpire's conviction and irrevocable powers, I don’t think that anyone of them likes to see disappointment on the face of any player or connoisseur because of a tight decision by an umpire. The effective usage of UDRS will also help umpires to refresh them with a pressure-less breeze flowing over them .After all every one likes to have an error free fair match.
Tail ender: As I am writing this, Australia finished the Day 1of Bengaluru test on 285-5,Ponting scored a half century, but got trapped in front of the wicket to a part-timer Suresh Raina ,gifting him a very special and memorable first ever test wicket . Wait a moment……did the ball miss leg?
