What started as a pleasant journey turned out to be a horror sent. 9th of January, 2011 will be remembered for a long time by those who travelled by the nightmarish “Canara” bus which was heading to Bangalore after having departed to Mangalore. As it was a Sunday, there were many office goers in the bus who had come to enjoy and relax the weekend with family hoping to reach early on Monday and get to work place. No one even imagined that not only would they have a sleepless night but that it would be a heart-stopper.
The journey began around 9pm on 9th January, and as the bus speeded through, everyone on board expected to reach on time perhaps before. Not to mention, the weather was really cool and the night was largely peaceful. It was a wonderful site for a night crawler to enjoy the quiet. At around 12.30 am (around midnight) the signs were not very encouraging. Something was going wrong, yet it was being overlooked. Most of us were in deep slumber; we did not know and possibly could not tell.
As the bus made headway into the Shiradi Ghat section the driver realized that going on the way it was , was to dig the own grave. So the bus was halted around 1pm and the cause of the problem was trying to be fixed after which a solution could be thought off.
After assuming and supposing that all is well, the driver thought to start again. Less than five minutes after the bus started, there was an engine failure and the breaks failure followed suit. That very moment, panic set in and the Medley of frustration and confusion gave in, the bus at the speed of 40km/hr and made progress not in forward direction but reverse, control was lost. Something was destined to happen now, either a crash on to a vehicle coming from back or if it was not to crash, the bus would have fallen into a deep pit, and would catch fire, ending the story there. Luckily there was a bus coming from back and the bus- Canara we were in smashed into the other. The impact was less, as the speed was less. We received a touch of heighted anxiety, a hint of death (thanks to the fuel tank not igniting). The heart-stopper came when the bus speeded in reverse not knowing where it was going. I witnessed the progress from my sleeper seat in futile submission. Had it crashed harder into a pit or elsewhere, the bodies would have been found only days later in different stages of thanatological change. Luckily no major hurt and all of us survived the ordeal.
But to get help, was an uphill task as there was no network coverage at all, and we see so many advertisements where the companies boost themselves. Hell to such people. The Remaining buses which went by didn’t bother to even stop and ask (KSRTCs included). There was a cruel form of humanity for display. It makes me wonder, How can people turn so in-human when there are a set of people begging for help, perhaps it is the time of crisis that tries men’s souls. There was a different sort of fear, if wild animals would attack as there no light either to get anywhere, and not to say, during such times, anti-elements may also have Hidden agendas.
After long waiting and shouting, a tempo driver agreed to take three passengers (myself included). As the tempo was tearing through the night and deep through the forest, thanks to the roads, a small journey became more than an hour. It was filled with pot-holes throughout, goes to show the government is not bothered and they care a dam, as the government officials will most of the time go by air, not only for official events but for tours too, using tax-payers money. They rarely use roads so they would not know about it even. After having reached a place called Sakleshpur around 3.45am I informed some authorities about the happenings as there was no range till then. A sense of tiredness engulfed me as the sleepless night took its toll. We waited at Sakleshpur till upto 5am for a KSRTC to arrive and then headed to Bangalore. About rest of the people we never heard from them again, each had to find his own way out. It was a journey one would never really think of and could only really sing praises to God for having come out safely for it could have been the most unexpected.
