South-East Asia has its own bag of surprises and tucked away in a small little bundle is the bustling metropolis of Singapore. Although the country is small with a few islands around it, the city offers a whole life time’s experience of indulging in fun, food, music, travel and many other outrageous activities.
Singapore is well connected by air with Air-India flying most of the routes from India. But make sure that you book your ticket well in advance on a budgeted airline. By this you can make sure you get your ticket for Rs. 6000. However, you may have to shell out a few Singapore dollars on the flight on food and drink. With the Singapore exchange rate being Rs 36 per S-Dollar, food and drink in Singapore are not that expensive as small snacks and cool drinks can come for less than $20.
On reaching Changi International Airport, which itself is an attraction, make sure you have your itinerary well planned out. Once you get to your hotel take good rest. Reserve that day for short trips around your hotel for local sight seeing and shopping. Singapore has one of the world’s biggest and branded malls. Brands from almost anywhere in the world can be seen here. Funan mall is known for consumer electronics. Mustafa is another mall where many Indians have their products. Traveling around Singapore is very convenient if you have the EZ Link card which can be recharged and tapped into, when you get on a bus and also in and out of train stations. The Mass Rapid Transit trains are fast and connect almost everywhere.
The Sentosa island is a one of its kind attraction which has many sections. Enter for a mere $35 and take the train or cable car to the Sentosa ResortsWorld. Visit the Butterfly and Insect park where you can see the biggest butterflies and also the rarest insects, not to mention some fossils of pre- historic insects. Sentosa is dotted with many rides which give you a spectacular view of the city. One such ride is the Tiger Tower. At 700 ft above the ground this revolving cabin can give you a bird’s eye view of the entire resort. Having done this indulge in an adventure sport invented in New Zealand called the Luge Sky ride. It is a sport where you ride on an almost flat gravity pulled cart which goes down hill on a track. Then, you get onto a cable driven seat which takes you right up the cable to give you a sky ride and a view of the trees and islands below. You can also purchase your picture once you finish. Megazip is another cable driven ride. Get strapped around your whole body to hang and glide down 100 feet on a cable straight to reach Siloso beach. At around 7 pm is the award winning Sound, Light and Laser show called ‘Songs of the Sea’ which runs for around 45 minutes. Sentosa also boasts of tram rides and hotels where you can book rooms. Don’t miss the 4D cinema show which screens the ‘Pirates movie’, an experience where you not only watch but feel the movie.
Singapore also has a beautiful Botanical Garden, where you get to appreciate a variety of orchids, ginger and bonsai plants. It also has an artificially created rain forest for you to get lost into. Having experienced nature at its best head over to the Raffles Avenue where you can witness man’s architectural wonders.
On Marina Bay stands the billion dollars worth Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The view from the bay is stunning. Its a three tower hotel with roof top section with swimming pools and other establishments. The famous Merlion lion statue stands on this bay, a great place for some imaginative photography. There are exotic restaurants and cuisines from all over the world around this area, including Indian food. You can go on cruise rides here as well. Walk through the Clark Quay area and reach the Marina Bay Sands hotel. This hotel has many hotels within it and various other malls and many more world class attractions. If it’s the night time, head straight to the Singapore Flyer which is considered the latest addition in Singapore’s Engineering wonders, a giant metal wheel structure which has capsules for people to sit into. This wheel rotates slowly to take you as high as 1000 feet above the ground to give you a 360 degree view of the dazzling night lights in Singapore. If it’s a day time, parts of Malaysia and Indonesia are also visible. For $29 this is really worth it. For few dollars more you can also arrange to dine inside this air conditioned cabin.
For a week or ten days Singapore offers you more than one can take in. Other attractions include, China Town, where you can feed on authentic Chinese cuisine and also shop Chinese stuff. Also, the night Safari where you can witness wild animals in natural habitat at night. The Universal Studios has rides based on Hollywood movie themes and is a thriller. Probably the most expensive city in South-East Asia, a tour of Singapore for 10 days will surely make you see the world coming together, an unforgettable experience.
