For those who have not enjoyed a ride at the carnivals, the buses in Mangalore are a place to be. If you are wondering why I have made such a remark, travelling in one of these buses will give you the answer.
With the dawn of each day, men, women and children get ready to begin their day at work or school. But the bus journey to their workplace and school is enough to ruin the day.
Even though there is a provision of buses in Mangalore, there is difficulty in getting sufficient place to travel. The reason is the large number of people who travel by bus. The buses are filled with a good number of students carrying heavy bags and tiffins. Apart from them, there are people who travel to work everyday. During the peak hours of the day, such as eight in the morning and nearly five in the evening, the buses are crammed with people and it is difficult to get in and out of the bus.
If this was not enough, the conductors yell at the people asking them to create place to accommodate more passengers. If you are somewhere in the middle of the bus and you have to get down at a particular stop, it is next to impossible to be able to get out. You have to push hard and get hit by a lot of men and women before you manage to come out. Sometimes you reach the doorway of the bus to realize that you are way ahead of where you had to be. Thus, to put an end to an already tiring day, you have to walk back till your destination.
Some of the buses do not wait for the passengers as they are behind schedule. Thus, people are seen running after them, hoping they would stop and let them board the bus. Pregnant women, old people and women with little children have a hard time in the bus and this is a difficult sight to see.
People have a tough time each day as they go though this journey and there is nothing much they can do. Since bus is an affordable means of transport, they have to endure the difficulty. Very often buses do not stop at the respective bus depot. Depending on the convenience of the driver, people are compelled to get off the bus, in the middle of the road. They are forced to step down there and make their way to safety, at the sides of the road. This is highly dangerous, in particular for small children who travel alone to schools.
Moreover, there is competition between the buses. Bus drivers take it very personally if they are overtaken by other buses. They make it a point to speed up until they have managed to overtake that particular bus. As a result, the numbers of deaths due to bus accidents have increased tremendously. People falling out of buses and getting hit by them have claimed the lives of many innocent people and children. To top it all, there are also instances were people have been hit and killed while waiting for buses at the depots.
Bus conductors and drivers are not the only ones at fault. The poor roads in Mangalore have become a nuisance to the drivers. They struggle everyday to make their way through the potholes and the traffic jam. Since they have to reach a particular place at a specified time, they stop the buses only if they are in accordance with the schedule. Bus drivers complain that they are not given enough time to go to the bathroom as they are charged a fine if they reach late even by a few minutes.
If proper measures are not taken to rectify the problems faced by the people and the bus drivers, these hardships will continue. Even though women are given a privilege of having few seats exclusively for them, this measure is not sufficient to tackle the problems. Certain seats should be allotted for old people and pregnant women and there needs to be a limit in the number of passengers in the bus. This will help to overcome the trouble of people falling out.
Besides, during the peak hours there has to be addition of some buses to help people reach schools and workplaces in time. Buses should give enough time for the people to get in and they themselves must be provided with sufficient time to reach their destination. Strict measures to avoid forcing people from stepping down in the middle of the traffic, also need to be taken.
For the bus drivers and the conductors, bus journey is routine and they find ways to make it adventurous. Even though we may enjoy this ride, it should not be one that costs the lives of other people or be a reason for their grief.
The difficulties faced by the people travelling by bus are plenty. It also holds good for the bus drivers and conductors. These problems need to be rectified and the measures taken needs to be strictly implemented. Since this concerns a large number of people it is necessary that a change is brought about.
