The first time Corporator Pravin, who has recently been elected as the Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation, represents the 24-Derebail (south) ward. He has completed ITI and is presently into catering business. He was also a state-level Kabaddi player during his high school days and was known as a good raider. He has served as the Health Standing Committee member.
He shares his views, aspirations and solutions for the problems of Mangaloreans with Safia Naeem:
What brought you into politics?
I have been in politics since 15 years and have led the students during my ITI course raising the various issues. I have a strong RSS background, as my father too was an RSS activist and he inspired me as well. In the sense, I followed my father’s footsteps. I can proudly proclaim that my blood itself is Janasangha! The discipline and sincerity which I learnt from RSS have formed ‘me and what I am today’.
The general assumption is that Bharathiya Janatha Party has an anti-Dalit attitude. Being a Dalit, how do you feel being in the Party? Have you faced any discrimination so far?
No, never. I have never felt or experienced any such discrimination against Dalits in the party. I strongly disagree with this statement since I got exposure to plenty of opportunities inside the party despite being a Dalit. Even high level politicians also visit my house and eat with us without any hesitation. BJP is a party of equality indeed. It never hesitated in selecting me as its Mayoral candidate and none of the BJP Corporators hesitated to elect me as the Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation. Look at Nalin Kumar Kateel! He is just an SSLC passed man. But, the party never bothered to field him as its candidate in the last Parliamentary elections. Where is the discrimination?
What would be your priorities as the Mayor?
I will concentrate more on completion of infrastructure development works which have been initiated by my predecessors.
I will ensure the supply of drinking water 24X7 for each and every residence. The much promising project of new Thumbay dam ensures sufficient round the clock water supply for next 20 years.
I will also try my best to construct footpaths and interior roads and there would be no compromise with those who encroach upon the footpath illegally.
One of major allegations against the ruling party of MCC, i.e., BJP is that it is favouring only BJP Corporators, while releasing funds. Opposition Corporators allege that you have sanctioned State Finance Commission (SFC) grants only for BJP represented wards. What do you say?
I cannot comment on what my predecessors have done since I have no knowledge of it. But as per the Government Order, there should be equal distribution of SFCs for each ward irrespective of its party representation.
I promise that during my tenure the SFCs will be distributed equally among all 60 wards. An action plan regarding this has also been prepared.
There is a lot of hue and cry from the poor residents of Tannirbavi regarding the title deeds and door numbers. They have even staged series of protests. How are you planning to sort out their problems?
MCC cannot take any step forward in this regard without the Government Order. However I will try my best to give justice for these people.
A large number of the Paurakarmikas in the MCC jurisdiction have been protesting on and off seeking the fulfilment of their various demands including the regularization of their services, job security and so on. What would be your contribution in solving their problems?
See, I am also a Dalit. All I can promise is that I will sort out their problems as early as possible with humanistic approach.
It is said that the Water bill arrears of Mangalore City Corporation since 2003-04 are Rs 9.77 crore?
Yes, we are seeking the suggestions from experts to find a permanent solution for this great inconvenience. MCC is also planning to have its own dedicated police force which will consist one PSI, an ASI, two head constables and four police constables. I hope, once we have this force, people will pay their bills in time and most of the problems will be solved.
There is an allegation about present Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) that it is causing inconvenience to the common man with little scope to build houses of their own?
Yes, I do agree that some kind of development has adverse impact. But, if the people had thought in that way, cities like Bangalore and Mumbai would not have existed in this country.
What are your views on corruption in MCC?
I will take stringent action if anyone is found guilty.
Could you tell us something about your family life?
Mine is indeed a happy family! My wife Synthia is working as an advisor in PSL Company at Bejai. My elder daughter Shifani is studying in 7th standard while younger daughter Suhani is studying in 3rd standard.
