He is one of the best Physical Directors St Aloysius College, Mangalore, has ever had. A great sportsperson, a great motivator, Benjamin D’Souza, lives on in the memory of his ardent students and whoever who happened to meet him or know him.
Benjamin D’Souza was ‘the man’ budding sportspersons would go to and look up to, irrespective of the type of sport. A chat with his students today, and you will know that cricket wasn’t something he was too good at. But the fact that a cricket club comprising some of his students is organizing a trophy named after him, speaks volumes about the man.
“He was very much fond of sports and was very energetic. He had keen interest in hockey and athletics. He always used to encourage me to take up javelin throw as I was a fast bowler”, recalls Sanath Kumar, Coach of the present Karnataka State Team, and an alumnus of St Aloysius College, Mangalore (1977-1980).
A significant trait of a sportsman is that he would always look to win. Benjamin D’Souza was blessed with that instinct in abundance. “He had this burning desire that we must win all the trophies. He was a great sportsman himself. Besides being a 100% physically fit person, he was an extremely supportive man, especially for the youngsters”, says Jayadev Kamath, Former Vice President, Mangalore Stock Exchange, and a student of Benjamin D’Souza.
Benjamin D’Souza was a ‘Practice what you preach’ principle personified. “I hardly saw any Physical Director who would play himself. He would run with the students, train with the students and play with the students. He was fond of hockey. Today, that hockey ground has turned into a parking lot. If he was alive today, he would have sat for a satyagraha there”, reveals Ratan Kumar, another student of Benjamin D’Souza, who studied at St Aloysius College, Mangalore from 1973-78, and represented the Mysore University cricket team during his college days.
Boys who were once his students, later went on to become great athletes and sportspersons. His students and well-wishers number in hundreds. No matter where they are today, they remember him fondly. A great teacher that he was, he commands respect from his students even today, when he is no more with them. It is out of this respect and admiration, that the members and office bearers of Mangalore Sports Club are organizing the “Benjamin D’Souza Inter-College Cricket Tournament” involving colleges from the districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu. The Club intends to organise the tourney every year in memory of one of the greaters Physical Directors the district has ever seen.
The tournament costs Mangalore Sports Club approximately Rs 1 lakh every year. Except for the entry fee of Rs 300, every other expense would be bourne by the Club.
