Doctors in other metros had refused to take up her case – due to the severity of the defect. There was also the baggage of a couple of failed surgeries to deal with. But,. Dr Mustafa K, a Mangalore-based maxillofacial surgeon took up the challenge and fixed the problem through a series of surgeries.
Simardeep, before and after the surgery
Now, after seven long years Dr Mustafa is a relieved man. "I had clearly told Simar's parents that there was only a 50% chance of success. But they were ready and it worked out well in the end," said Dr Mustafa, who performed the surgeries at Unity Health Complex along with a team of doctors comprising of Dr Shehzana Fathima and anesthetist Dr Sripad a couple of months ago..
Deformity:
The Chandigarh girl’s face had not grown completely and she had a severe collapse and retrusion. She went under the scalpel for the first time when she was just two and half months old and got her lip repaired. Then she faced surgery again after four months when her palate operation was performed. But due to sheer bad luck the surgery was out and out failure.
“On the third day the stitches gave way and that setback further complicated her case. Two more surgeries were performed by two different doctors. Though they were successful now nobody was ready to operate on her palate,” Gurdeep Singh Juneja, Simardeep’s father recalled the traumatic days.
“There was not a single hospital that we did not visit. But no one was ready to operate.
Many times we were told to let her be with the obdurator (an artificial plate like thing in her mouth). Our daughter was growing and along with her we were getting worried and desperate day by day,” he continued.
The Chandigarh family was finally referred to Dr Mustafa by Dr Vinod Kanpur. “At that time we had never heard of Mangalore. Soon we boarded the train with our daughter and hope and reached Mangalore with the names of 2-3 doctors of that city,” recalled Gurdeep.
“In Mangalore we met the doctors, but it was Dr. Mustafa with whom we were impressed. He was the one who explained to us everything in detail,” he added.
The first surgery was performed five years ago. The hole in the palate had to be closed and that could not be managed by the conventional method. Dr Mustafa transferred the tissue from the tongue and closed it. The procedure was called tongue flap and it was performed across 25 days. “Days filled with tension and hope. After 20 days. He told us that our prayers have been answered the surgery was successful,” Gurdeep noted.
It was just the beginning of a long and tedious journey that had to be traversed bit by bit. Four more surgeries followed and all were highly successful. The last surgery was the most complicated. Simar’s jaw had to be brought forward by 22 mm. “Conventional method was to cut the facial bone and bring it forward. Since it was severe, we used an external distracter, so that the mid face could be moved in an incremental fashion,” Dr Mustafa said.
Simar’s parents consider the five months they had to spend in Mangalore to see through her final surgery and post-operation care as the hardest. “Those were five tough months for the doctor, us and our daughter. Along with the jaw distraction. He restored the confidence of our daughter by impressing her looks also,” said Gurdeep.
“It is not easy to see your child suffering, lying on bed with so many tubes, crying of pain with injection but it is the blind faith that we have in the capability of Dr. Mustafa that made us go back to Mangalore from Chandigarh as and when he suggests,” he added.
Simardeep, these days is busy with her 10th board exams. "This year she was in Mangalore for almost five months so she has missed a lot, but she is working quite hard and we hope by the grace of god she will get good marks," said Gurdeep, who has an automobile spare parts business in Chandigarh.
Regarding the follow up surgery and treatment he said: "we will proceed as Dr Mustafa decides. But as of now she is going for regular dental treatment here in Chandigarh.
Simar has three siblings and one among them is her twin brother, who is also appearing for his 10th exams. Her brother and sister are doing law and engineering respectively. "The entire family is delighted about the progress of her treatment," an understandably happy Gurdeep told 'Coastaldigest.com'
