With the recent hype on Baba Ramdev’s fast against corruption and black money winning the people’s attention, Swami Nigamanand’s recent death came as a huge surprise.
When Baba Ramdev started his fast against corruption and black money, many political leaders rushed to his aid and endless measures were adopted to persuade Baba to end his campaign. Moreover, immediate steps were taken to ensure that the Government orders a probe.
As Baba Ramdev and his followers refused to vacate Ramleela Maidan in Delhi, the police had to coerce them to move away and this created a huge turmoil. This incident came to be compared to Jallianwallabagh, a memorable event in the history of Indian freedom.
To show their support towards Baba, the members of the BJP urged to convene an emergency session of the Parliament. They submitted a memorandum to the President, Prathibha Patil, requesting her to look into the issue.
Moreover, the Karnataka Government which has enough on its own plate, condemned the incident, while Chief Minister Yeddyurappa sought an apology from the Central Government for its action.
When such hype was created in the interest of Baba Ramdev, it is surprising that Swami Nigamanand’s hunger strike and fight against corruption was unheard of.
It is unfortunate that the fast undertaken by Swami Nigamanand for a similar cause got no acknowledgment. When many political leaders rushed to give support to Baba Ramdev, it is hapless that Swami Nigamanand’s four month hunger strike to end illegal quarrying got no interest.
Swami Nigamanand started his indefinite fast to end illegal mining around the river Ganga on February 19. However, very little was done in this regard. Even though the Uttarakhand Government had issued two orders to stop the mining, these orders were challenged by a stone crusher owner. The court then rejected his petition and mining was to be strictly banned. Nevertheless, it did not make any difference and Swami Nigamanand continued his hunger strike, losing his life in the process.
Both Baba Ramdev and Swami Nigamanand fought for the same cause, the obliteration of corruption in our country. Yet, sadly Swami Nigamanand’s hard work received no reward. When efforts were being made to convince Baba Ramdev to end his fast and give up the hunger strike, it is appalling that Swami Nigamanand had to give up his life for his voice to be heard.
From a long time we have observed the political parties alleging corruption charges against each other. Pointing out the mistakes of another and asking them to resign is the usual story we read everyday. What we do not read is whether there is any serious effort to ascertain that the politicians and authorities are accountable for their work.
Like in various other issues, a probe has been ordered to look into the death of Swami Nigamanand due to allegations that the Swami died due to poisoning. It will take a long time to determine the finding of the probe. Meanwhile what is being done for the purpose Swami Nigamanand gave up his life? Is the real meaning of Swami Nigamanand’s struggle forgotten?
While ordering an enquiry on the death of Swami Nigamanand is very important, it would be more conducive if the illegal quarrying around the Ganga is controlled, making sure that Swami Nigamanand didn’t die for nothing.
