Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar in which Muslims around the world spend their days from dawn to dusk abstaining from food, drink and conjugal relationship as obedience to the will of the Almighty. It is an annual training programme for believers to refresh and enrich their belief and moral values.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) addressed a gathering of believers at the end of Shaban, the 8th month in the Islamic calendar saying, "Oh people! A great month has come over you; a blessed month, a month in which is a night better than a thousand months, month in which Allah has made it compulsory upon you to fast by day, and it is voluntary to pray during the night. Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the good deeds in this month shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in this month shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is Heaven. It is the month of charity, and a month in which a believer's sustenance is increased. Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast, shall have his sins forgiven, and he will be saved from the Fire of Hell, and he shall have the same reward as the fasting person, without his reward being diminished at all.”

Encouraged by the enormous rewards promised, a very large part of the world’s population competes in carrying out good deeds, becomes sympathetic towards fellow humans and exhibits love and brotherhood. Fasting in the month of Ramadan not only emphasizes on the individual spiritual development but also on a spiritual rejuvenation collectively at the community level.
It is a month in which the Creator of the universe revealed the holy Qur’an as guidance to mankind. The holy Qur’an says: "The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the Criterion (between right and wrong). So, whoever of you sights the month, he/she must observe fasts”.
Therefore it becomes the foremost duty of a believer to get closer to the divine guidance sent by the creator, rejuvenate the understanding of the holy Qur’an, study it as a means to distinguish truth from falsehood and live up to its guidance. The disciplined and consistent study of the divine book of guidance throughout the month paves way for the believers to inculcate its teachings throughout their life.
For every deed ordained by Almighty Allah there should be a purpose that always leads mankind to a successful life in this world and the hereafter. Likewise the holy Quran thus states the purpose of fasting. “Believers, fasting is enjoined upon you as it was enjoined upon those before you that you may attain Taqwa (God consciousness)” (Qur’an 2:183).Although the meaning of the Arabic word Taqwa cannot be exactly ascertained, it can be translated as God consciousness, self restraint, piety or virtuousness. The real meaning of Taqwa is to feel the presence of God and obey His commands while indulging in any deeds and actions and be protected from all types of evils, sins and destructive actions. In a nutshell Taqwa is to develop a strong character by obeying the commands of the Almighty. So the real purpose of fasting is to instill Taqwa in human hearts. Fasting is ordained as a source of becoming Muttaqun (God Consciousness, self restraint, pious and virtuous)
While abstaining from food and drink and conjugal relationship for several hours a day is the outer dimension of fasting there is an inner dimension which makes up the real essence of fasting. Keeping away from food and drink but not abstaining oneself from deeds that lead to moral degradation will definitely not serve the purpose of fasting. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) has said: “Whoever did not give up lying and practicing falsehood, Allah is in no need of his giving up food and water”. In another occasion he said: “Many are the fasters whose fasting does not bring them anything except hunger and thirst and many are those who keep standing in the night but their standing does not bring anything except being awake in the night”. These are clear messages for those who observe the outer dimension of fasting and ignore its real essence.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also reminded the believers of the reward for the fast observed with introspection of one’s deeds and desires whether they adhere to the boundaries set by Allah and are done merely to seek the pleasure of Allah. In one of his Hadith he has said “Whoever observed fast imbued with faith and Introspection, with the expectation of reward from Allah, all his past sins are forgiven”.
By abstaining from food and drink in private and in public a believer truly exhibits his strong love for his Creator and an unstinted faith that He is All knowing and All powerful. Without these a person can never forsake his desires and that is why a believer is promised with abundant untold rewards for fasting. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said that Allah says “Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except fasting, it is for Me and I will reward it”
Ramadan is also called the month of patience as it involves great will power to control ones desire and selfishness. A fasting person is asked to remain aloof from quarrel and abuse. Fasting is a shield that protects a believer from unruly behavior towards his fellow beings. If anybody abused a fasting person or quarreled with him Prophet Muhammad has instructed him to abstain from retaliation and reply him by saying “I am fasting, I am fasting”( please do not expect me to do the same as you did).
Character building is a difficult and continuous process and this annual training programme comes every year as a reminder and refresher. No doubt that the month of Ramadan provides an opportunity for the development of character individually and collectively. It is also equally important that this spirit of obedience and goodness should be emulated and displayed the whole year. Wishing you all a blessed month of Ramadan.
