It has been observed since quite some time that ill-health has been used as an escape by the suspects for appearing at court proceedings. While the time spent in going about the illegal activities and irregularities is seen as a very healthy period of life, it is unfortunate that an arrest or a judicial order to appear in court leads to the detection of several diseases and ailments.
Despite the rejection of the bail plea of Katta Subramanya Naidu, the whole world came to know that the former minister suffered from a number of 'ailments'. It started with cardiac complaint just after 12 days of his stay at the jail. Unfortunately, the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology that treated him ruled out any cardiac related complication. He was then taken to Victoria Hospital and to his great relief, the initial diagnosis confirmed that he suffered from Diabetes, neck pain and Hypertension. However, his happiness did not last long as the doctors said he was fit for discharge in a few days time.
But it did not end there. Soon after Ganesh Chaturthi, the minister suffered from diarrhea and subsequently complained of back pain. While the doctors insist that physiotherapy and medication would be sufficient for cure, Katta has been insisting that he had to get that operated. Certainly, the surgery will give him more time at the hospital and it sure does look like a very tempting offer.
Suresh Kalmadi, CWG Organising Committee Chairman and a suspect in the CWG scam has recently been in news for the possibility of his having Dementia, which would disrupt the probe on CWG scam. Although his medical history reports of possible Dementia in the initial stages, it is astonishing that such facts surfaced as soon as Kalmadi was inquired upon.
Not far away is the former Chief Minister of Karnataka B.S. Yeddyurappa who is not so much in the limelight these days. When he was asked to appear before court along with 10 others, Yeddyurappa tried to escape personal appearance by citing the most common of all excuses- ill health. However, to his misfortune, this demand got rejected and he was asked to appear another day.
To add to this list is the actor Darshan Toogudeepa’s arrest on charges of beating up his wife. The actor was treated for mild jaundice and asthma after he had been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. The Bangalore Central Prison Officers had no choice but to take him to the hospital as the actor complained of breathlessness. He was also treated for dehydration and exhaustion.
Surprisingly, these ministers, actors and men in power suffer ailments and diseases when they are arrested or summoned by the court. How is it that they are perfectly fine when they go about their other duties, especially the ones that get them into prison?
Has ill-health become an easy escape route for most of the culprits who are to be punished? Is it a means to postpone the trail and take as much time as possible to let the matter settle down and slowly try to untangle them from the mess?
If this tamasha is allowed to continue, certainly, the fight against corruption is going to go a waste. Despite being arrested and brought to trail, these suspects have found a way to get away or procrastinate. Strict judicial order can put a full stop to it. When can that happen? - is a question that may remain unanswered!
